The side-mounted fingerprint sensor

The Nova 5T reads your fingerprint from a sensor built into the power button on the right-hand edge rather than through the display or on the rear panel. That is genuinely good news for repairs.

Because the sensor sits in the frame as a separate component, a screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards. On phones with in-display readers, a rushed screen fitting can leave the owner with a perfect display and a fingerprint sensor that recognises nothing. On the Nova 5T that risk simply does not exist.

Four rear cameras under one glass cover

The Nova 5T carries a four-camera array on the back, and they sit beneath a shared glass panel. A crack across that housing lets dust reach multiple lens assemblies at once, which is why photographs often go soft or hazy after a drop even when the phone otherwise seems fine.

If your pictures have deteriorated since an accident, mention it when you get in touch. Owners routinely put it down to the phone ageing and never raise it, when the actual cause is a cracked camera cover that is far cheaper to deal with early.

An LCD screen, and the free test that comes with it

The Nova 5T uses an LCD with a conventional backlight behind it. That keeps the screen replacement at £119, and it hands you a diagnostic check that costs nothing.

If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle. If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone. A great many perfectly repairable devices get written off because nobody thought to try this.

Battery replacement at £59

These are now several years into service and batteries are far and away the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault before booking. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone feels slow rather than short of charge, check available storage first, because a nearly full handset crawls whatever the cell is doing.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the USB-C cable, because after this many years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone of this age and which we clear at no charge.

Only when all three come back clean is our £55 charging port repair the right answer. Plenty of people pay for port work that a cheap replacement cable would have solved.

Is a Nova 5T worth repairing?

For a single repair on a handset that still does what you need, yes. A £59 battery on a phone already set up the way you like it is easy arithmetic, and £119 for a screen sits well below what a comparable replacement costs.

Where it stops adding up is two repairs at once – a screen and a battery together starts to approach what the phone is worth, and we will tell you that rather than quoting for both and letting you work it out afterwards. If the handset holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off.

Liquid damage: the first hour matters most

The Nova 5T has no meaningful water resistance. If liquid gets in, switch it off immediately and leave it off – do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived.

Power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable phone into a dead one, and it accounts for more write-offs than the liquid itself. Rice achieves nothing useful.
