The Plus is the larger of the pair, with a sharper screen and a brighter Leica lens – and a quote for one is meaningless for the other.

P10 or P10 Plus? Check the size and the screen

The Plus has a noticeably larger, sharper display than the standard P10. Both have a fingerprint sensor on the front, in a slim pad below the screen, so that will not tell them apart.

Open Settings, then About phone, and read the model number before you ring anywhere. It takes seconds and it is definitive. A display ordered against the wrong P10 will not fit, and the delay while the correct one is sourced is entirely avoidable.

Because the sensor sits in the bottom bezel immediately below the display, it has to be disconnected, transferred and reconnected during a screen replacement. It is a genuine step rather than an afterthought, and a rushed job can leave you with a working screen and a fingerprint reader that no longer responds.

The Leica cameras after a drop

The P10 Plus used a brighter Leica lens than the standard model, and that camera was a large part of why people bought it. The rear glass over the housing deserves attention after any accident – a crack there lets dust reach the lens assemblies, and photographs that have gone soft or hazy since a drop usually point there rather than at software or age.

Owners routinely assume it is simply the phone getting old and never mention it, so do raise it when you get in touch.

An LCD screen, and the free test that comes with it

The P10 Plus uses an LCD with a conventional backlight, which gives you a diagnostic that costs nothing. If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone.

Battery replacement at £55

These are now well into their second half of life and batteries are overwhelmingly the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault first. A worn cell copes with messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. If the phone feels slow rather than short of charge, that is more likely storage and software than the cell.

Charging faults: cable, plug, then lint

Change the cable first, because after this many years most originals have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone of this age and which we clear at no charge. Only after all three is our £49 charging port repair the right answer.

Is a Huawei P10 Plus worth repairing?

On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once, and we will tell you when you have reached that point rather than quoting for all of them. If the phone holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off.

Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself. What we check before your P10 Plus goes back

A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. Before a P10 Plus leaves us we test touch response into all four corners, the fingerprint reader, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the front and rear cameras, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Seated slightly out of position it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call. Owners reasonably assume that is a software bug – it is not, and catching it in the workshop takes minutes rather than costing you a second trip.
