The camera that made this phone’s reputation

Huawei fitted three Leica-branded rear cameras to the P20 Pro at a time when two was still unusual, and the results genuinely embarrassed more expensive rivals. Owners tend to keep these phones for that reason alone, long after they would have replaced anything else.

For repairs it means the rear glass deserves attention. A crack running across the camera housing lets dust reach the lens assemblies, and photographs that have gone soft or hazy after a drop usually point there rather than at software or age. If your pictures have deteriorated since an accident, say so when you get in touch – it is a fault owners routinely assume is just the phone getting old.

The fingerprint sensor is below the screen, not in it

The P20 Pro has a physical fingerprint sensor in the chin beneath the display rather than an in-display reader. That is worth knowing when comparing repairs: on the later P30 and P30 Pro, the sensor sits behind the panel and a screen replacement can leave it unable to recognise anything if the job is rushed.

Here the sensor is a separate component. It still has to be transferred and reconnected properly during a screen replacement, and we test it before the phone goes back, but it is a less fragile arrangement than the in-display system that replaced it.

OLED, and what a drop does to it

The P20 Pro uses an OLED panel, which is why the blacks look as good as they do and why the display is less forgiving than an LCD. A drop can damage the panel even when the outer glass survives looking intact.

If colours have shifted, a coloured line has appeared, or an area has stopped responding to touch, that is the display rather than the glass and the full assembly needs replacing. There is no cheaper glass-only route on a bonded OLED – anyone offering one is either quoting for a different handset or planning something that will not last.

Battery replacement at £55

These phones are now well into their second half of life and batteries are overwhelmingly the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive strips that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.

Confirm the battery is at fault before booking. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone feels slow rather than short of charge, check available storage first, because a nearly full handset crawls whatever the cell is doing.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the USB-C cable – after this many years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone of this age and which we clear at no charge. Before a P20 Pro leaves us we test touch response into all four corners, the fingerprint pad below the screen, the earpiece and loudspeaker, all three rear cameras and the front camera, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Fitted slightly out of position, it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons mid-call and mutes people. It looks exactly like a software bug and it is not. Checking it takes minutes in the workshop and saves you a second trip.

Why a case matters more after a screen repair

A replacement panel is bonded to the frame with fresh adhesive, and that bond is at its most vulnerable in the first few days while it fully cures. A drop in that window is far more likely to lift an edge than the same drop would be months later.

More generally, on a phone where the screen is the most expensive component, a case with genuinely raised corners does more practical good than any other accessory. The corners are where impact energy concentrates, and a case that sits flush with the glass offers almost no protection to the part you have just paid to replace.
