The torch test that saves these phones

The Y6s uses an LCD with a conventional backlight, which gives you a diagnostic that costs nothing. If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a £69 screen replacement rather than a dead phone. Is it slow, or is it simply full?

Worth separating before you spend anything, because only one of them costs money. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together. On a handset this affordable, £49 is straightforward money when the cell is genuinely the problem.

Confirm that it is. A worn cell handles light use perfectly well and then collapses under any real load. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, a new battery will not change that, and we would rather tell you than take the booking.

Charging faults are often free to resolve

Clearing compacted lint from the socket is not a chargeable job here, and on a phone of this age it is the most likely cause by a distance. After that, change the cable and then the mains plug, because worn cheap cables cause far more of these faults than broken ports do.
