The first Leica dual camera

Huawei’s partnership with Leica began with this phone, pairing a colour sensor with a monochrome one and combining the two for detail and contrast that genuinely stood out in 2016. It is the reason the P9 is remembered at all, and the reason a proportion of owners have never quite wanted to let go.

For repairs it means the rear glass over the camera deserves a look after any drop. A crack across that housing lets dust reach the lens assemblies, and photographs that have gone soft or hazy since an accident usually point there rather than at software or age.

An LCD screen and the free test worth running

The P9 uses an LCD with a conventional backlight, which is why the screen repair is only £79 and which gives you a diagnostic check that costs nothing.

If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle. If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable. On a phone this age that single check regularly decides whether a device gets repaired or thrown in a drawer.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back

The P9 has a conventional fingerprint reader on the rear panel, entirely separate from the display. A screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards, which removes a step that causes real problems on later Huawei models where the sensor sits behind the screen.

Is a P9 still worth repairing?

We would rather be straight with you than take a booking you regret. The P9 is now approaching a decade old. The hardware still manages calls, messaging, browsing and photographs, but a good deal of current software will not install on it, and some apps that do will not work properly.

As a second phone, a first phone for a child, a dedicated camera or a handset for somebody who wants something simple, a £49 battery is fair money to keep one going. If you need it to keep pace with current apps, a repair here is money aimed at the wrong problem and we will say so.

After this many years the original cell holds a small fraction of its designed capacity, and this is overwhelmingly the most common reason these still arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that has to be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.

If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, a battery will not help. That is age, software and full storage, and we would rather tell you that than take £49 for a repair that disappoints you.

Charging faults on a decade-old socket

Change the cable before anything else, because after this long virtually every original cable has failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is close to guaranteed on a phone that has spent years in pockets and which we clear at no charge. What if it is not worth repairing?

We will say so, and on a device this age that is a real possibility. Two faults together takes you past the point where the sums work. What is stored on the phone usually matters far more than the phone itself – old photographs and messages that exist nowhere else can frequently be recovered even from a handset that will never switch on properly again. Does your P9 get hot while charging?

Some warmth during charging is normal on any phone. What is not normal is a handset that becomes uncomfortable to hold, or one that gets noticeably hot while sitting idle rather than under load.

On a phone of this age the usual cause is the battery itself. A cell that has lost a large part of its capacity works harder to accept and hold a charge, and that inefficiency comes out as heat. It is worth acting on rather than ignoring, because a swollen or overheating cell can put pressure on the display from behind – if your screen has started to lift very slightly at an edge, stop charging the phone and get it looked at.
