The Huawei P20 Lite was one of the first affordable phones to adopt the notched, edge-to-edge look that flagships had only just introduced, and it sold in very large numbers in the UK as a result. Plenty are still going, and at £119 for a screen replacement they remain straightforward to keep running.

P20, P20 Lite or P20 Pro? They are three different phones

The names run close enough together that mistakes are common, particularly with second-hand handsets. The quickest check is the rear camera: the P20 Pro has three lenses, the P20 and P20 Lite have two, and the Lite is the smaller and lighter of those two in the hand.

Open Settings, then About phone, to be certain. It matters because all three take different display assemblies, and a panel ordered against the wrong model simply will not fit. Quote the model number when you contact us and we can confirm the correct part and price on the first conversation rather than the second.

An LCD screen, and the free test it gives you

The P20 Lite uses an LCD with a conventional backlight rather than the OLED fitted to the P20 Pro. That keeps the repair affordable, and it hands you a diagnostic check that OLED owners do not get.

If your phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when plugged into a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle. If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone. A great many perfectly repairable devices get written off because nobody thought to try this.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back

The P20 Lite has a conventional fingerprint reader on the rear panel rather than an in-display sensor. It is entirely separate from the screen assembly, which means a screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards.

On the later P30 and P30 Pro, where the sensor sits behind the display, this is the step a rushed repair skips – leaving the owner with a perfect screen and a fingerprint reader that recognises nothing. On the P20 Lite it is simply not a risk.

Battery replacement at £55

These are now several years into service and batteries are overwhelmingly the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that has to be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault before booking. A worn cell copes with messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, check available storage first – the P20 Lite shipped with modest capacity, fills up quickly, and a nearly full handset crawls whatever the cell is doing.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the USB-C cable, because after this many years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone this age and which we clear at no charge.

Only when all three come back clean is our £49 charging port repair the right answer. On a handset at this price, paying for port work that a cheap replacement cable would have solved is a genuinely poor outcome.

Is a P20 Lite worth repairing?

On a phone that otherwise works, yes for a single repair. A £55 battery is easy arithmetic on a handset you are used to and whose contacts, apps and photographs are already set up the way you like. Where it stops adding up is two repairs at once – a screen and a battery together comes close to what the phone is worth, and we will say so rather than quoting for both and letting you work it out afterwards.

Liquid damage: the first hour decides the outcome

The P20 Lite has no meaningful water resistance. If it goes in a sink, a puddle or a washing machine, switch it off straight away and leave it off – do not plug in a charger and do not keep pressing the power button to see whether it survived.

Power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable phone into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself. Rice is not a treatment either; it draws surface moisture while corrosion quietly spreads across the board underneath. The useful thing is speed – get the handset to us so the board can be properly cleaned before corrosion sets. Fitting a screen protector after a repair

Wait a day or two before applying one. A replacement panel is bonded to the frame with fresh adhesive, and pressing a protector firmly onto a screen that has not fully cured can lift an edge or trap the panel slightly out of plane.

When you do fit one, a plain tempered glass protector is the sensible choice on a flat-screened phone like this. They sit flush, they absorb the small knocks that would otherwise chip a corner of the glass, and replacing a £6 protector is a considerably better outcome than replacing a screen.
