LCD, not OLED – and why that saves you money

The P30 and P30 Pro use OLED panels, which generate light at each individual pixel and cost considerably more to manufacture. The P30 Lite uses an LCD with a conventional backlight. That single difference accounts for most of the gap between a £109 repair here and £179 or more on the flagships.

It also brings a practical advantage worth knowing about. OLED panels can develop a coloured line down the display spontaneously, and they can be damaged by a drop even when the outer glass survives. An LCD is more robust in that specific respect, and it gives you a diagnostic test the flagship owners do not get – described below.

The torch test that rescues these phones

If your P30 Lite appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the screen at an angle. If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the phone.

This only works on LCD handsets, and it matters because everything on the device is intact and recoverable. You are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone, and a great many perfectly repairable handsets get written off because nobody ran this check. It costs nothing.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back, and that is good news

Unlike the P30 and P30 Pro, which read your fingerprint through the display, the P30 Lite has a conventional sensor on the rear panel. It is entirely separate from the screen assembly, which means a screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards.

On the flagship models this is the step a rushed repair skips, leaving the owner with a perfect screen and a fingerprint reader that recognises nothing. On the Lite it simply is not a risk, which is one less thing to worry about when comparing quotes.

Battery replacement at £59

These are now several years into service and batteries are far and away the most common reason they reach us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault before booking. A worn cell copes with messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, check available storage first – a nearly full handset crawls whatever the battery is doing, and clearing space costs nothing.

Charging faults: try these before paying

Change the USB-C cable, then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is the single most likely cause of a cable that will not seat properly and which we clear at no charge. Only when all three come back clean is our £59 charging port repair the right answer.

On a phone at this price, paying for port work that a cheap replacement cable would have fixed is a poor outcome, and it happens more than it should.

Liquid damage: what to do in the first hour

The P30 Lite has no meaningful water resistance, and what you do in the first hour matters more than anything we can do afterwards. Switch it off immediately and leave it off. Do not plug in a charger, and do not keep turning it on to see whether it still works.

Running power through a wet board is the single most common way a recoverable phone becomes a dead one, and it is the mistake we see more than any other. Rice does nothing useful – it absorbs surface moisture while corrosion continues on the board underneath. What helps is getting the handset to us quickly so the board can be cleaned properly before that corrosion takes hold. Back up before you send your phone in

Sensible before any repair, anywhere. Screen and battery work leaves your data untouched and we take care not to disturb it, but a handset that already has a fault can behave unpredictably, and a backup costs nothing but a few minutes.
