The second generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro from 2017 has a price on our list that surprises people: a screen replacement is £289, which is more than the newer 2018 and 2020 models of the same size. That looks backwards, and there is a real reason for it worth explaining before you compare quotes anywhere.

How much does an iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd gen, 2017) repair cost?

Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:

  • Screen replacement — £289
  • Battery replacement — £79
  • Charging port repair — £79
  • Diagnostic service — £15

Each covers the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee, with nothing added at the end.

Why an older screen can cost more than a newer one

Panel pricing follows supply rather than age. The 2018 redesign sold in very large numbers and stayed in production a long time, so replacement assemblies for it are plentiful and competitively priced. The 2017 model was a shorter-lived design that was superseded within about eighteen months, and the supply of good quality replacement panels for it is correspondingly thinner.

Scarce parts cost more. That is the whole explanation, and it is why a repairer quoting you the same figure for a 2017 and a 2018 12.9-inch Pro is either not distinguishing between them or is planning to fit something we would not. We would rather set out the reason than have the number look arbitrary.

What that means for the repair decision

It shifts the maths and you should know that before committing. A £79 battery on a 2017 Pro that still does its job is straightforwardly worth doing — these remain capable machines for drawing, documents, video and music. A £289 screen on a device of this age needs proper thought against what a good used replacement would cost.

Our position is that we would rather lose the job than take £289 for a repair that leaves you feeling it was not worth it. If the numbers do not work we will say so, and if the iPad holds artwork or notes that were never backed up we will point out that data recovery alone may be the cheaper route to what you actually need.

This was the first ProMotion iPad

The 2017 Pro introduced ProMotion, the 120Hz variable refresh display that made scrolling and Pencil work feel dramatically smoother. It was a genuine step change at the time and it is still noticeable today.

It also raises the bar for a screen replacement. A panel that looks fine on a static home screen can stutter visibly when you scroll a long page or drag a window. When you get any ProMotion iPad back from any repairer, scroll something long and text-heavy and watch for judder, then draw a slow diagonal corner to corner and check the line is unbroken. Those two tests take fifteen seconds and catch most poor fittings. We run them ourselves before returning a device.

Apple Pencil 1 and the Lightning socket

This generation uses the first Apple Pencil, which charges by plugging into the iPad’s Lightning port. It does not support the magnetic Apple Pencil 2 — if yours will not attach to the side edge, nothing is broken and no repair can add the capability.

Because the Lightning socket takes both the charger and the Pencil, it sees more insertions than most. Even so, change the cable before assuming the port has failed, then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Our £79 charging port repair is the last answer rather than the first.

Battery replacement at £79

Batteries are the most common reason these reach us now. The cell is physically large and bonded across a wide area, so it must be eased out slowly rather than levered — force on a chassis this size risks creasing the panel. After reassembly the iPad is charge-tested rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is the issue before booking. A worn cell handles reading and streaming and then drops sharply during video calls, gaming or long Pencil sessions. Sudden collapse under load is the signature.

Check the frame before ordering a panel

Large iPads deform rather than shatter when they land badly, and a bent chassis is the most common reason a screen repair fails weeks later. Rest the iPad face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner in turn — any rocking means the frame has moved. On a £289 part that check matters more than usual, and we would rather establish it before you commit than after.

How long does a 2017 12.9-inch iPad Pro repair take?

Battery and charging work is usually same-day once the device is with us. Screen replacement can take longer than on newer models, partly because the assembly is large and bonded and partly because parts for this generation are less freely available. We give you a realistic timescale with the fixed quote rather than an optimistic one.

Where can I get a 2017 12.9-inch iPad Pro repaired?

iExpert Repairs handles second generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro repairs from our Essex workshop and accepts devices from across the UK by tracked, fully insured post. contact us to arrange it or to get a straight answer on whether the screen repair is worth doing.

We cover iPad screen repair, iPad battery replacement, iPad charging port repair and iPad water damage repair on every iPad generation, offer data recovery where a device cannot be economically saved, and handle other brands under tablet repair.

Is the iPad Pro water resistant?

No iPad Apple has ever made carries an IP rating of any kind, and there are no seals or gaskets inside this one. People who have got used to modern iPhones surviving a spill are often caught out by that, and a device with this much flat surface is exactly what a knocked-over glass reaches first.

If liquid gets in, switch it off immediately and do not connect a charger. Running power through a wet board is the single most common way a recoverable iPad becomes a dead one, and it is the mistake we see more than any other. Get it to us before corrosion establishes itself — our iPad water damage repair service covers exactly this, and where a board cannot be saved we can usually still attempt data recovery to retrieve the artwork and notes stored on it.

2017 12.9-inch iPad Pro Repairs: Questions Answered

Why does this screen cost more than a newer iPad Pro screen?

Panel pricing follows supply rather than age. The 2018 redesign sold in huge numbers over a long production run, so replacement assemblies are plentiful and competitively priced. The 2017 model was superseded within about eighteen months, so good quality panels for it are scarcer — and scarce parts cost more.

Should I be suspicious of a cheaper quote elsewhere?

It is worth asking what part is being fitted. A repairer quoting the same figure for a 2017 and a 2018 12.9-inch Pro is either not distinguishing between the two or is planning to fit something we would not. The models take different assemblies and the supply situation is genuinely different.

Is a £289 screen worth it on a 2017 iPad?

It needs proper thought against what a good used replacement would cost, and we will give you our honest view. A £79 battery on one that still does its job is straightforwardly worth doing. We would rather lose the screen job than take £289 for a repair that leaves you feeling it was not worth it.

What is ProMotion and how do I test it after a repair?

It is the 120Hz variable refresh display this generation introduced, which made scrolling and Pencil work dramatically smoother. To test it, scroll something long and text-heavy and watch for judder, then draw a slow diagonal corner to corner and check the line is unbroken. Fifteen seconds, and it catches most poor fittings.

Why will my Apple Pencil 2 not attach to this iPad?

Because this generation uses the first Apple Pencil, which charges by plugging into the Lightning socket. The magnetic Pencil 2 is not compatible and never was. Nothing is broken, and no repair can add the capability — you need a 2018 model or later for that.

How do I check the chassis before committing to a screen repair?

Rest the iPad face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner in turn. Any rocking means the frame has deformed, and a new panel cannot bond flat to a frame that is not flat. On a £289 part that check matters more than usual, so tell us before we order anything.
