Why an older screen can cost more than a newer one

Panel pricing follows supply rather than age. The 2018 redesign sold in very large numbers and stayed in production a long time, so replacement assemblies for it are plentiful and competitively priced. The 2017 model was a shorter-lived design that was superseded within about eighteen months, and the supply of good quality replacement panels for it is correspondingly thinner.

Scarce parts cost more. That is the whole explanation, and it is why a repairer quoting you the same figure for a 2017 and a 2018 12.9-inch Pro is either not distinguishing between them or is planning to fit something we would not. We would rather set out the reason than have the number look arbitrary.

What that means for the repair decision

It shifts the maths and you should know that before committing. A £79 battery on a 2017 Pro that still does its job is straightforwardly worth doing — these remain capable machines for drawing, documents, video and music. A £289 screen on a device of this age needs proper thought against what a good used replacement would cost.

Our position is that we would rather lose the job than take £289 for a repair that leaves you feeling it was not worth it. This was the first ProMotion iPad

The 2017 Pro introduced ProMotion, the 120Hz variable refresh display that made scrolling and Pencil work feel dramatically smoother. It was a genuine step change at the time and it is still noticeable today.

It also raises the bar for a screen replacement. A panel that looks fine on a static home screen can stutter visibly when you scroll a long page or drag a window. When you get any ProMotion iPad back from any repairer, scroll something long and text-heavy and watch for judder, then draw a slow diagonal corner to corner and check the line is unbroken. Those two tests take fifteen seconds and catch most poor fittings. We run them ourselves before returning a device.

Apple Pencil 1 and the Lightning socket

This generation uses the first Apple Pencil, which charges by plugging into the iPad’s Lightning port. It does not support the magnetic Apple Pencil 2 — if yours will not attach to the side edge, nothing is broken and no repair can add the capability.

Because the Lightning socket takes both the charger and the Pencil, it sees more insertions than most. Even so, change the cable before assuming the port has failed, then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Battery replacement at £79

Batteries are the most common reason these reach us now. The cell is physically large and bonded across a wide area, so it must be eased out slowly rather than levered — force on a chassis this size risks creasing the panel. After reassembly the iPad is charge-tested rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is the issue before booking. A worn cell handles reading and streaming and then drops sharply during video calls, gaming or long Pencil sessions. Sudden collapse under load is the signature.

Check the frame before ordering a panel

Large iPads deform rather than shatter when they land badly, and a bent chassis is the most common reason a screen repair fails weeks later. Rest the iPad face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner in turn — any rocking means the frame has moved. On a £289 part that check matters more than usual, and we would rather establish it before you commit than after.

Is the iPad Pro water resistant?
