The ceramic back changes everything about a drop

Huawei fired the rear panel of the P40 Pro+ from ceramic rather than moulding it from glass. Ceramic is considerably harder and far more scratch-resistant, which is why these phones often still look pristine years later – but it is also more brittle, and when it does break it tends to go decisively rather than spidering.

It matters for repairs because ceramic is unforgiving of the heat and flex used to open a phone. Rushed disassembly cracks a back that survived the original drop intact, which is exactly the sort of avoidable damage a cheap repair produces.

The periscope camera and what dust does to it

The P40 Pro+ carries a periscope zoom – the lens sits sideways inside the body and a prism bounces light through it, which is how Huawei fitted that much optical reach into a phone this thin. It is the standout feature and the reason many owners have never wanted to replace the handset.

After a drop, the rear glass over the camera housing deserves attention. A crack there lets dust reach the prism assembly, and long-range shots that have gone soft or hazy point at that rather than at software. If your zoom photographs have deteriorated since an accident, say so – owners routinely assume it is the phone ageing and never mention it.

The four-sided curved display

Like the P40 Pro, this model uses an Overflow screen curved on all four sides, so the panel is bonded to the frame around its entire perimeter. There is no flat edge to lift from, the adhesive must be released with controlled heat all the way round, and refitting demands the same care in reverse.

An impact anywhere on that perimeter transmits into the panel, so the display is frequently damaged even when the glass looks intact. Shifted colours, a coloured line or dead touch areas all mean the full assembly needs replacing rather than just the outer glass.

Ghost touch after a poor repair

If the phone begins registering taps you did not make, that is ghost touch. It is not software and a factory reset will not clear it. On a panel bonded around all four sides, uneven adhesive or a display seated under tension gives the digitiser constant pressure to misread as a finger.

It usually appears days or weeks after a repair rather than immediately, which is why owners rarely link the two. A correctly bonded panel does not behave this way, and anything we fit carries 12 months of cover if it does.

The in-display fingerprint sensor

The fingerprint reader sits behind the display. A screen replacement must seat the new panel correctly against it and retest enrolment afterwards – skip that and you get a flawless screen paired with a reader that recognises nothing. We test enrolment and unlock before any P40 Pro+ goes back.

Battery replacement at £75

This phone supports very fast wired and wireless charging, and cells charged hard age faster than those charged gently. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly.

Before booking, confirm the battery is the problem. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone feels slow rather than short of charge, check available storage first.

Charging faults: the free checks

Change the USB-C cable, then change the mains plug and make sure it is the proper high-wattage charger rather than a small spare – an underpowered plug shows the phone as connected while charging very slowly, which looks exactly like a hardware fault. Is a Huawei P40 Pro+ worth repairing?

On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once, and we will tell you when you have reached that point rather than quoting for all of them and hoping you do not run the numbers. If the phone holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off.

Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself.
