Eight phones, one name – which is yours?

The 2020 model has a small teardrop notch at the top of the screen, a fingerprint reader on the rear panel, and no pop-up camera. If yours has a camera that rises out of the top edge, you have a P Smart Z or Pro. If it has no rear fingerprint reader at all, you likely have the P Smart S with its in-display sensor.

Open Settings, then About phone, and read the model number before you ring anywhere. It takes seconds and it is definitive. A display assembly ordered against the wrong P Smart will not fit, and that delay is entirely avoidable.

The rear fingerprint sensor is good news

The reader sits on the back panel, entirely separate from the screen assembly. A screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards.

That matters when you compare quotes. On Huawei models with in-display readers – the P Smart S, the P40 Pro, the P50 Pro – a rushed screen fitting can leave a perfect display paired with a fingerprint sensor that recognises nothing. On the P Smart 2020 that risk simply does not exist.

The torch test worth running first

The P Smart 2020 uses an LCD with a conventional backlight, which gives you a free diagnostic. If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at an £89 screen replacement rather than a dead phone. A great many perfectly repairable devices get written off because nobody thought to try this.

Battery replacement at £55

These are now several years into service and batteries are the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault before booking. A worn cell copes with messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, check available storage – these shipped with modest capacity and a nearly full handset crawls whatever the cell is doing.

Is it slow, or is it simply full?

Worth separating before spending anything. A handset close to storage capacity behaves exactly like a failing one: apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots, everything drags and updates fail without explanation. None of that is a hardware fault and no repair addresses it.

Move photographs off, clear cached data and uninstall what you no longer use. It costs nothing and it resolves the complaint more often than people expect on phones of this class.

Charging faults: cable, plug, then lint

Change the cable first – after several years most originals have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which we clear at no charge. Only after all three is our £55 charging port repair the right answer.
