Mate 30 or Mate 30 Pro? Look at the sides

The quickest check takes a second. The Pro has no physical volume buttons at all and a display that falls away almost vertically at both edges. The standard Mate 30 has ordinary volume buttons on the right-hand side and a much gentler curve.

Settings, then About phone, confirms it outright. It matters because the two take entirely different display assemblies and a panel ordered against the wrong model will not fit – and because the Pro’s screen is a considerably more involved fit, its repair costs more.

Physical volume buttons make this the easier repair

On the Pro, the curved edge of the screen is the volume control, so a replacement panel has to read touch accurately right down a steep curve or the owner cannot change the volume. The standard Mate 30 has no such dependency – the buttons are mechanical and entirely separate from the display.

That removes a whole category of post-repair fault, and it is a genuine advantage of owning the standard model rather than the Pro.

The in-display fingerprint sensor

The Mate 30 reads your fingerprint through the display, using a sensor mounted behind the panel. A screen replacement has to seat the new panel correctly against that sensor and retest enrolment afterwards.

Otherwise the phone comes back with a perfect screen and a fingerprint reader that no longer recognises anything – discovered the next time you pick it up rather than in the shop. We test enrolment and unlock before any Mate 30 leaves us.

What a drop does to an OLED

OLED panels can be damaged by an impact even when the outer glass survives looking intact. If colours have shifted, a coloured line has appeared, or an area has stopped responding to touch, that is the display rather than the glass and the full assembly needs replacing.

There is no cheaper glass-only route on a bonded OLED like this one – glass, touch layer and panel form a single unit and are replaced together.

Battery replacement at £65

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together. This model supports fast charging, and cells charged hard age faster than those charged gently.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault before booking. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone feels slow rather than short of charge, check available storage first.

Charging faults: the free checks

Change the USB-C cable, then change the mains plug and make sure it is a proper high-wattage charger rather than a small spare – an underpowered plug shows the phone as connected while charging very slowly. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Our £59 charging port repair is the last answer, not the first.

Is a Huawei Mate 30 worth repairing?

On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself. What we check before your Mate 30 goes back

A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. We test touch response into the curved edges, fingerprint enrolment and unlock, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the rear cameras, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Seated slightly out of position it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call.
