Huawei P Smart Z Repair
The Huawei P Smart Z was the first phone in the range with a motorised pop-up selfie camera, which is what gave it that clean, notchless screen - and it is also the part that most often needs attention years later. We repair the pop-up mechanism, screens, batteries and charging ports using quality parts, and every job is covered by a 12-month warranty on parts and labour.
Tell us what has gone wrong and we will confirm a fixed price before any work starts. Visit our Essex workshop or use our tracked, fully insured UK-wide mail-in service - and if a repair is not worth doing on a phone at this price, we will say so rather than take the booking.

The Huawei P Smart Z was Huawei’s first phone with a motorised pop-up selfie camera. Removing the front camera from the display is how it achieved an uninterrupted 6.59-inch screen with no notch and no punch-hole, and at the time nothing else at its price did that. It also gave the phone the one moving part that no other handset in our Huawei range has.
How much does a Huawei P Smart Z repair cost?
Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:
- Screen replacement – £95
- Battery replacement – £55
- Charging port repair – £55
- Diagnostic service – £15
Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee, with no assessment fee added afterwards. The £15 diagnostic applies only to faults outside this list and includes a fixed quote before any work begins.
The pop-up camera is a moving part, and moving parts wear
Every other phone we repair has a front camera that simply sits behind glass. The P Smart Z has a small motor that physically raises the camera out of the top edge each time you switch to selfie mode, then retracts it.
Mechanisms like this fail in recognisable ways. The camera rises slowly or hesitantly. It sticks halfway. It makes a grinding noise. It retracts on its own. Or it stops rising at all, and the camera app reports an error. None of that is software, and none of it is something you have done wrong – it is a mechanical assembly reaching the end of its life, usually because of dust and grit working into the rails over years of use.
Grit is the enemy of a pop-up camera
Because the mechanism opens to the outside world, it draws in whatever is in your pocket or bag. Fine dust and sand are what kill these, not drops. If yours has started to sound rough or move slowly, it is worth acting before it seizes entirely – a mechanism that is merely gritty is a very different job from one that has stripped its gearing.
It is also why we would gently suggest not forcing it. If the camera is stuck partly raised, pushing it back down by hand is how a slow mechanism becomes a broken one. Bring it to us as it is.
A notchless LCD, and the free test that comes with it
The P Smart Z uses an LCD with a conventional backlight, which keeps the screen replacement at £95 and gives you a diagnostic that costs nothing.
If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle. If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone.
The fingerprint sensor is in the side button
With no room on the front and the rear panel given over to the camera housing, Huawei put the fingerprint reader into the side power button. That is helpful for repairs: the sensor sits in the frame as a separate component, so a screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards.
Battery replacement at £55
The P Smart Z carried a large battery for its class, which is a good part of why owners liked it. After several years of daily cycling that capacity drops noticeably, and this is one of the most common reasons these arrive with us.
The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together. Confirm the battery is at fault first: a worn cell handles messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls.
Charging faults: three free checks
Change the cable, because after several years most originals have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which we clear at no charge. Only when all three come back clean is our £55 charging port repair the right answer.
Is a Huawei P Smart Z worth repairing?
On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once, and we will tell you when you have reached that point rather than quoting for all of them. If the phone holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off.
Liquid damage: what to do straight away
Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself. Rice does nothing useful. Getting it to us quickly, so the board can be cleaned before corrosion establishes itself, is what improves the odds. Our water damage repair service covers this.
How long does a Huawei P Smart Z repair take?
Battery and charging work is usually completed the same day once the phone is with us. Screen replacement takes a little longer because the bonded assembly has to come out and go back cleanly, with the sensors tested afterwards. We confirm timing alongside the fixed quote and start only once you approve it.

Huawei P Smart Z Repairs: Questions Answered
My pop-up camera is slow or sticking. Can it be fixed?
Usually yes, and it is worth acting early. The P Smart Z raises its front camera on a small motor, and dust and grit working into the rails over years is what causes slow, hesitant or grinding movement. A mechanism that is merely gritty is a very different job from one that has stripped its gearing.
My camera is stuck halfway. Should I push it back down?
Please do not. Forcing a partly raised camera back by hand is how a slow mechanism becomes a broken one. Bring or send the phone to us exactly as it is, and we will assess the mechanism before anything is moved.
Why did Huawei use a pop-up camera at all?
To get rid of the notch. Moving the front camera out of the display is how the P Smart Z achieved an uninterrupted 6.59-inch screen with no notch and no punch-hole, which nothing else at its price offered at the time. The trade-off is the one moving part in the phone.
My P Smart Z is black but still rings. Is it dead?
Probably not. Take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the screen at an angle - if the home screen is faintly visible, the backlight has failed rather than the phone. Everything on it is intact, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead handset.
Will a screen repair affect my fingerprint sensor?
No. The P Smart Z reads your fingerprint from the side power button, which sits in the frame as a separate component. A screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards.
Do I need a charging port repair or just a cable?
Try the free things first. Change the cable, since after several years most originals have failed internally at the strain relief, then the mains plug, then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge.
