The Huawei Mate 8 is the oldest phone in our Mate range, and it built its reputation on one thing: endurance. A 6-inch display paired with a very large battery gave it stamina almost nothing else offered in 2016, and plenty of owners kept theirs for years because of it.

The battery is why these come to us

A phone bought because it lasted two days is unmistakably failing when it no longer reaches the evening. Lithium cells lose capacity by charge cycles rather than calendar age, so a Mate 8 used daily since launch will hold a small fraction of its original capacity.

At £49 a replacement is the single repair that most transforms one of these, and it is the cheapest battery we fit on any Mate. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly.

A large LCD, and the free test that comes with it

The Mate 8 uses an LCD with a conventional backlight, which gives you a diagnostic that costs nothing. If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If the home screen is faintly visible, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable. On a phone of this vintage that single free check often decides whether a device gets repaired or drawered.

A 6-inch phone from 2016 falls hard

The Mate 8 is large and built largely from metal, which is why so many have survived the outside of a decade. It also means real mass behind any fall. Corner impacts and frame deformation are what we see most, and a bent frame stops a new panel bonding flat.

If yours has been dropped, rest it face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner. Any rocking is worth mentioning before we order a part.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back

A conventional rear-mounted reader, entirely separate from the display. A screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards, which removes a step that causes real problems on later Huawei models with in-display sensors.

Is a Mate 8 still worth repairing?

Honestly, it depends on the job you want it to do. The hardware still handles calls, messaging, browsing and video, and a £49 battery on a phone in that condition is fair money. What it will not do is run current software – a decade-old handset no longer receives updates and many apps will not install.

As a spare phone, an emergency handset in a car, or a device for somebody who wants something simple and long-lasting, it can still earn its keep. Two faults at once takes you past the point where the sums work, and we will say so rather than quoting for both.

Charging faults on a decade-old socket

Change the cable before anything else – after this long virtually every original cable has failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is close to guaranteed on a phone this age and which we clear at no charge. Our £49 charging port repair comes last.

What we check before your Mate 8 goes back

A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. Before a Mate 8 leaves us we test touch response into all four corners, the fingerprint reader, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the front and rear cameras, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Seated slightly out of position it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call. Owners reasonably assume that is a software bug – it is not, and catching it in the workshop takes minutes rather than costing you a second trip.

Is a Huawei Mate 8 worth repairing?

On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once, and we will tell you when you have reached that point rather than quoting for all of them. If the phone holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off.

Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself.
