An £89 OLED screen is unusual

OLED panels normally push a repair well past the hundred pound mark, and on newer Huawei flagships they do. The Mate 10 Pro is the exception, because the phone sold in large numbers, the panel is flat rather than curved, and the part has been in circulation long enough for supply to settle.

Flat matters as much as anything. A curved OLED has to be released with controlled heat and re-bonded evenly around the sides of the frame, which is slow and unforgiving work. A flat panel is a considerably more straightforward job, and that shows up in what you pay.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back

The Mate 10 Pro has a conventional fingerprint reader on the rear panel rather than one hidden behind the display. It is entirely separate from the screen assembly, so a screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards.

On the later Mate 20 Pro and Mate 40 Pro, where the sensor sits behind the panel, this is the step a rushed repair skips – leaving the owner with a perfect screen and a fingerprint reader that recognises nothing. On this model it simply is not a risk, which is one less thing to weigh when comparing quotes.

What a drop does to an OLED

OLED panels can be damaged by an impact even when the outer glass survives looking intact. If colours have shifted, a coloured line has appeared, or an area has stopped responding to touch, that is the display rather than the glass.

There is no cheaper glass-only route on a bonded OLED assembly like this one – glass, touch layer and panel form a single unit and are replaced together. Anyone offering a bargain glass-only repair on a Mate 10 Pro is either quoting for a different handset or planning something that will not last.

Battery replacement at £65

The Mate 10 Pro carried a large battery and genuinely excellent endurance when new, which is exactly why owners notice the decline. After this many years of cycling, capacity drops substantially, and this is far and away the most common reason these arrive with us.

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together. Confirm the battery is the problem first: a worn cell handles messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls.

Charging faults: cable, plug, then lint

Change the USB-C cable, because after this many years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone of this age and which we clear at no charge.
