Mate 10 or Mate 10 Pro? They are different phones

The standard Mate 10 uses an LCD and has a fingerprint sensor on the front, below the screen. The Mate 10 Pro uses an OLED and puts its fingerprint reader on the back. They look similar at a glance and take completely different display assemblies.

The battery is why these come to us

Lithium cells lose capacity by charge cycles rather than calendar age, so a Mate 10 used daily since launch will hold a fraction of its original capacity. At £55 a replacement is the single repair that most transforms how one of these feels, and on a handset that otherwise works it is straightforward money.

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together. Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault first: a worn cell manages messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls.

An LCD screen, and the torch test

The Mate 10 uses an LCD with a conventional backlight, which gives you a diagnostic that costs nothing. If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone. A great many perfectly repairable devices get written off because nobody thought to try this.

The front fingerprint pad and screen repairs

Because the sensor sits in the bottom bezel immediately below the display, it has to be disconnected, transferred and reconnected during a screen replacement. A rushed job can leave you with a working screen and a fingerprint reader that no longer responds, so we test enrolment and unlock before any Mate 10 leaves us.

Is it slow, or is it simply full?

Worth separating before spending anything. A handset close to storage capacity behaves exactly like a failing one: apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots, everything drags. None of that is a hardware fault and no repair addresses it.

Move photographs off, clear cached data and uninstall what you no longer use. It costs nothing and it resolves the complaint more often than people expect on phones of this age.

Charging faults: cable, plug, then lint

Change the cable first, because after this many years most originals have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone this age and which we clear at no charge. A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. Before a Mate 10 leaves us we test touch response into all four corners, the fingerprint reader, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the front and rear cameras, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Seated slightly out of position it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call. Owners reasonably assume that is a software bug – it is not, and catching it in the workshop takes minutes rather than costing you a second trip.

On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off.
