Mate 20, Mate 20 Lite or Mate 20 Pro?

Three phones, one family name, three completely different display assemblies. The Pro has a curved screen and a wide notch; the standard Mate 20 is flat with a small teardrop notch; the Lite is flat with a wider notch and is the smallest and lightest of the three in the hand.

Open Settings, then About phone, to be certain. It genuinely matters, because a panel ordered against the wrong model will not fit and a quote for one is meaningless for the others. Quote the model number when you contact us and we can confirm the correct part and price straight away.

The faults your Lite cannot develop

The Mate 20 Pro became known for a green tint appearing at the edges of its OLED panel – a panel-level fault that no software update could resolve. Your Mate 20 Lite uses an LCD, so it cannot fail that way, and neither can it develop the coloured vertical line OLED displays are prone to.

The Pro also reads fingerprints through the display, which means a hurried screen replacement can leave a perfect screen paired with a reader that recognises nothing. The Lite has a conventional sensor on the rear panel, entirely separate from the screen assembly. A screen repair cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed.

The torch test worth trying first

Because the Mate 20 Lite has an LCD with a backlight behind it, there is a free check that rescues a surprising number of these. If yours appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the phone. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a £99 screen replacement rather than a dead handset. A great many perfectly repairable phones get thrown away because nobody ran this check.

Battery replacement at £65

These are now several years into service and batteries are overwhelmingly the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is genuinely the problem before booking. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, check available storage first – a nearly full handset crawls whatever the cell is doing, and clearing space costs nothing.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the cable first, because after this many years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone this age and which we clear at no charge.

Only when all three come back clean is our £55 charging port repair the right answer. On a handset at this price, paying for port work that a cheap replacement cable would have solved is a genuinely poor outcome.

Is a Mate 20 Lite worth repairing?

For a single repair on a phone that otherwise works, yes. A £65 battery on a handset you are used to, with your contacts, apps and photographs already set up the way you like, is easy arithmetic. Where it stops adding up is two repairs at once – a screen and a battery together comes close to what the phone is worth, and we will say so rather than quoting for both and letting you work it out afterwards.

Liquid damage: what to do straight away

The Mate 20 Lite has no meaningful water resistance. If liquid gets in, switch the phone off immediately and leave it off – do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it still works.

Power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it accounts for more losses than the liquid itself. Rice does nothing useful: it pulls surface moisture while corrosion spreads across the board underneath. Speed is what helps, so the board can be cleaned properly before that corrosion takes hold. Back up before you send it in

Sensible before any repair, anywhere. Screen and battery work leaves your data untouched and we take care not to disturb it, but a phone that already has a fault can behave unpredictably, and a backup costs nothing but a few minutes.
