The Huawei Mate 20 Pro was one of the most technically ambitious phones of its generation. It had a curved OLED display, an in-display fingerprint sensor, proper 3D face unlock, and it was the first phone that could wirelessly charge other devices from its own battery. All of that ambition has consequences when something breaks, and it is worth understanding before you commit to a £179 screen replacement.

How much does a Huawei Mate 20 Pro repair cost?

Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:

  • Screen replacement – £179
  • Battery replacement – £65
  • Charging port repair – £59
  • Diagnostic service – £15

Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee, with no assessment fee added afterwards. The £15 diagnostic applies only to faults outside this list and includes a fixed quote before any work begins.

The green tint problem, and what it actually is

If the edges of your Mate 20 Pro display have taken on a green cast, particularly at low brightness or on dark backgrounds, you are not imagining it and you did not cause it. A proportion of these handsets developed exactly that fault, and it became well known enough that Huawei addressed it publicly at the time.

It is a panel-level problem rather than a software one, so no update or setting change will remove it. A screen replacement resolves it. Before you book anything, though, it is worth establishing whether your handset falls under any remaining Huawei support for the issue – we would rather point you there than take £179 for something you might not need to pay for.

Both an in-display fingerprint sensor and 3D face unlock

The Mate 20 Pro is unusual in carrying two proper biometric systems. The fingerprint reader sits behind the display, and the notch houses a genuine 3D depth-sensing array for face unlock rather than the simple camera recognition most Android phones use.

Both have implications for a screen repair. The new panel has to be seated correctly against the fingerprint sensor and enrolment tested afterwards, or you end up with a flawless screen and a reader that recognises nothing. The face unlock module in the notch has to be transferred and re-seated precisely, and a fraction out leaves you with unlock that works intermittently or not at all. We test both before any Mate 20 Pro goes back. If you are comparing quotes elsewhere, ask whether they do.

Curved OLED, and why the screen costs what it does

The panel curves over both long edges, which means the glass is bonded around the sides of the frame rather than sitting flat on top of it. Removing one requires controlled heat to release the adhesive, and fitting the replacement requires re-bonding it evenly. Rush either step and the panel lifts at an edge within weeks.

The curve also makes the phone less forgiving of a drop onto its side. A Mate 20 Pro that lands on an edge frequently damages the display even where the glass looks undamaged – shifted colours, a coloured line, or dead touch areas all point to the panel rather than the glass.

Reverse wireless charging and the battery

This was the first phone that could charge other devices wirelessly from its own battery, and owners who use that feature notice the cell ageing sooner, because it is doing more work. At £65 a replacement is straightforward, and the cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered.

Confirm the battery is genuinely the problem first. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone feels slow rather than short of charge, check available storage before assuming the battery.

Charging faults: free checks before you pay

Change the USB-C cable – after this many years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which we clear at no charge. Only when all three come back clean is our £59 charging port repair the right answer.

Wireless charging after a screen or battery repair

The Mate 20 Pro charges wirelessly and can also charge other devices from its own battery, and both of those depend on a coil sitting directly behind the rear glass. It is worth knowing because a repair that involves opening the phone has to put that coil back exactly where it was.

If wireless charging has become unreliable – working only in one particular position on a pad, or not at all – after a previous repair elsewhere, that is usually a coil that has been reseated slightly out of position or a connector that was not fully clipped back down. It is not a software fault and no update will fix it. We check wireless charging works before returning any Mate 20 Pro, because it is precisely the sort of thing an owner discovers a week later rather than in the shop.

What we check before your Mate 20 Pro goes back

A screen replacement on this model is not finished when the display lights up. We test touch response into all four corners, fingerprint enrolment through the display, face unlock, the earpiece and loudspeaker, all three rear cameras, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most. Fitted slightly out of position it fails to blank the screen when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek mutes people mid-call. It looks like a software bug and it is not.

How long does a Huawei Mate 20 Pro repair take?

Battery and charging work is usually completed the same day once the phone is with us. Screen replacement takes longer, because a curved bonded OLED has to be heated out and re-bonded cleanly and both biometric systems need testing afterwards. We confirm timing alongside the fixed quote and start only once you approve it.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro Repairs: Questions Answered

Why have the edges of my Mate 20 Pro screen gone green?

That is a known panel-level fault on a proportion of these handsets - you did not cause it, and it became well enough documented that Huawei addressed it publicly at the time. No software update removes it. A screen replacement resolves it, but check first whether your handset falls under any remaining Huawei support before paying us.

Will face unlock and the fingerprint reader survive a screen repair?

They will if the work is done properly, and we test both. The fingerprint sensor sits behind the display and needs the new panel seated correctly against it with enrolment retested. The 3D face unlock module in the notch has to be transferred and re-seated precisely - a fraction out and unlock becomes intermittent.

Why is a Mate 20 Pro screen more expensive than a standard Mate 20 screen?

The Pro uses a curved OLED bonded around the sides of the frame, while the standard Mate 20 uses a flat LCD. The curved panel costs more to manufacture and takes controlled heat to release and re-bond evenly. That is time as much as parts, and it is why the two prices differ so much.

My screen is not cracked but the colours look wrong. Is that fixable?

Yes, and it is the panel rather than the glass. The curve makes this phone less forgiving of a drop onto its side, and the display can be damaged even where the glass survives intact. Shifted colours, a coloured line, or dead touch areas all mean the full assembly needs replacing.

Does reverse wireless charging wear the battery out faster?

Owners who use it regularly do tend to notice the cell ageing sooner, simply because it is doing more work. At £65 a replacement is straightforward. Check it is genuinely the battery first - a worn cell copes with messaging and then collapses during camera use, navigation or video calls.

Wireless charging stopped working after a repair. Why?

The charging coil sits directly behind the rear glass, and a repair that involves opening the phone has to put it back exactly where it was. If wireless charging now only works in one position on a pad, or not at all, that is usually a coil reseated slightly out of position or a connector not fully clipped down. No software update fixes it.
