Mate 20 or Mate 20 Pro? Check the screen edges

The quickest way to tell is to look at the sides of the display. The Pro curves over both long edges; the standard Mate 20 is flat. The Pro also has a wide notch housing a 3D face unlock array, while the Mate 20 has a small teardrop notch for a plain front camera.

Settings, then About phone, confirms it outright. It is worth establishing before you ring anywhere, because the two take entirely different display assemblies and a quote for one is meaningless for the other.

Two faults your phone cannot develop

The Mate 20 Pro became known for a green tint appearing at the edges of its OLED panel, a fault at panel level that no software update could fix. An LCD cannot fail that way, and neither can it develop the coloured vertical line that OLED displays are prone to.

The Pro also reads fingerprints through the display, which means a rushed screen replacement can leave the owner with a perfect screen and a reader that recognises nothing. Your Mate 20 has a conventional fingerprint sensor on the rear panel, entirely separate from the screen assembly – a screen repair cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards.

The torch test that saves these phones

Because the Mate 20 uses an LCD with a backlight, there is a free check worth running before you write the phone off. If it appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone. A great many perfectly repairable devices get thrown away because nobody thought to try this.

Battery replacement at £65

The Mate 20 carried a large battery for its time, and that is a big part of why owners hang on to them. After several years of daily cycling, though, capacity drops noticeably, and this is the most common reason these arrive with us.

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together. Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault first: a worn cell handles messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the USB-C cable first, because after this many years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone of this age and which we clear at no charge. Is a Mate 20 worth repairing?

On a handset that otherwise works, yes for a single repair. A £65 battery on a phone you are used to, with your contacts, apps and photographs already arranged the way you like them, is straightforward arithmetic against replacing it.

Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once. A screen, a battery and a charging port together takes you past the point where the numbers work, and we will tell you when you have reached it rather than quoting for all of them and hoping you do not notice. If the phone holds anything that was never backed up, ask about data recovery before you write it off.

What we check before your Mate 20 goes back

A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. Before a Mate 20 leaves us we test touch response into all four corners, the rear fingerprint reader, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the rear cameras and front camera, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

The proximity sensor causes the most trouble when it is missed. Seated slightly out of position, it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call. Owners reasonably assume that is a software problem. It is not, and it is easy to catch in the workshop and irritating to discover a fortnight later.

Fitting a screen protector afterwards

Leave it a day or two. A replacement panel is bonded with fresh adhesive, and pressing a protector down hard onto a screen that has not fully cured can lift an edge or seat the panel slightly out of plane.

Once it has settled, a plain tempered glass protector is well worth having on a flat-screened phone like the Mate 20. It sits flush, absorbs the small knocks that chip a corner of the glass, and replacing a cheap protector is a far better outcome than replacing a screen. On a phone where the display is the single most expensive component, that is not a close decision.
