Huawei Mate 20 X Repair
The Huawei Mate 20 X is one of the largest phones ever sold in the UK, with a 7.2-inch OLED display and a cooling system borrowed from gaming laptops. That size is its appeal and also its weakness - a phone this big carries real mass when it falls. We replace large OLED panels properly, fit batteries that suit its heavy workload, and back every repair with a 12-month warranty on parts and labour.
Select the fault below and we will confirm a fixed price before any work starts. Visit our Essex workshop or use our tracked, fully insured UK-wide mail-in service - and we will advise on packaging, because a phone this size needs boxing properly for transit.

The Huawei Mate 20 X is enormous. Its 7.2-inch OLED display made it one of the largest phones ever sold in the UK, and Huawei fitted it with a vapour chamber and graphene cooling layer – technology borrowed from gaming laptops – to keep it running under sustained load. Both of those facts shape what goes wrong with it and what a repair involves.
How much does a Huawei Mate 20 X repair cost?
Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:
- Screen replacement – £149
- Battery replacement – £65
- Charging port repair – £59
- Diagnostic service – £15
Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee, with no assessment fee added afterwards.
A 7.2-inch phone falls differently
More screen means more mass, and more mass means more force through whichever corner hits the floor. The Mate 20 X is also routinely used two-handed and held further from the body than a normal phone, so when it goes it tends to go from higher up.
The practical result is that we see more corner impacts and more frame deformation on these than on any other Huawei. If yours has been dropped, rest it face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner in turn – any rocking means the chassis has moved, and a new panel cannot bond flat to a frame that is not flat. Tell us before we order a part rather than after.
The cooling system and what it tells you
The vapour chamber exists because this phone was built to be pushed – long gaming sessions, video, navigation. That is exactly the workload that ages a battery fastest, and it is why Mate 20 X batteries often decline sooner than owners expect for a phone of this age.
If yours runs hot during ordinary use rather than under load, that is worth investigating rather than living with. A cell losing capacity works harder to hold charge, and that inefficiency shows up as heat – which in turn accelerates the decline further.
A large OLED is a demanding fit
Big bonded panels are easy to stress during fitting. Flex a display this size even slightly out of plane while seating it and it cracks, which is why this is not a job to rush. It also means an impact can damage the panel even when the outer glass survives looking intact.
If colours have shifted, a coloured line has appeared, or an area has stopped responding to touch, that is the display rather than the glass. There is no cheaper glass-only route on a bonded OLED.
The fingerprint sensor is on the back
The Mate 20 X uses a conventional rear-mounted fingerprint reader rather than an in-display sensor. It is entirely separate from the screen assembly, so a screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards – one less thing to go wrong compared with the Mate 20 Pro.
Battery replacement at £65
The Mate 20 X carried a very large battery to drive a very large screen, and endurance was a genuine selling point. That makes the decline obvious when it comes. The cell is physically substantial and bonded across a wide area, so it has to be eased out patiently rather than levered – force on a chassis this size risks creasing the panel.
Confirm the battery is the problem first. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during gaming, video or navigation – which on this phone is exactly what you bought it for.
Charging faults: three free checks
Change the USB-C cable, then the mains plug, and check it is a proper high-wattage charger – a phone with a battery this large will show as connected to a small plug while gaining almost nothing. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Our £59 charging port repair is the last answer, not the first.
Is a Huawei Mate 20 X worth repairing?
On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once, and we will tell you when you have reached that point rather than quoting for all of them. If the phone holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off.
Liquid damage: what to do straight away
Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself. Rice does nothing useful. Getting it to us quickly, so the board can be cleaned before corrosion establishes itself, is what improves the odds. Our water damage repair service covers this.
How long does a Huawei Mate 20 X repair take?
Battery and charging work is usually completed the same day once the phone is with us. Screen replacement takes a little longer because the bonded assembly has to come out and go back cleanly, with the sensors tested afterwards. We confirm timing alongside the fixed quote and start only once you approve it.
Where can I get a Huawei Mate 20 X repaired?
iExpert Repairs handles Huawei Mate 20 X repairs from our Essex workshop and accepts devices from anywhere in the UK by tracked, insured post, so being local is not a requirement. contact us to arrange it or to describe the fault first.
We cover Huawei repairs across every model, plus phone battery replacement and water damage repair. See our mobile phone repairs page for other brands and UK-wide tech repairs for everything else we handle.
What we check before your Mate 20 X goes back
A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. Before a Mate 20 X leaves us we test touch response into all four corners, the fingerprint reader, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the front and rear cameras, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor, along with the cooling system under sustained load.
The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Seated slightly out of position it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call. Owners reasonably assume that is a software bug – it is not, and catching it in the workshop takes minutes rather than costing you a second trip.
Huawei Mate 20 X Repairs: Questions Answered
Why does the Mate 20 X get damaged more than other Huawei phones?
Size. At 7.2 inches it carries far more mass than a normal phone, so more force goes through whichever corner lands. It is also used two-handed and held further from the body, so it tends to fall from higher up. We see more corner impacts and frame deformation on these than any other Huawei.
How do I check whether the frame is bent?
Rest it face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner in turn. Any rocking means the chassis has deformed. Tell us before we order a panel, because a new screen cannot bond flat to a frame that is not flat - it will sit proud, flex and crack again.
My Mate 20 X runs hot. Is that the cooling system failing?
More often it is the battery. A cell losing capacity works harder to hold charge and that inefficiency shows up as heat, which then accelerates the decline further. Heat under heavy gaming is normal for this phone; heat during ordinary use is worth investigating.
Why do Mate 20 X batteries fade sooner than expected?
Because of how the phone gets used. It was built for sustained load - long gaming sessions, video, navigation - and that is exactly the workload that ages a battery fastest. The vapour chamber cooling exists precisely because this phone was designed to be pushed.
Will a screen repair affect my fingerprint sensor?
No. The Mate 20 X uses a conventional rear-mounted reader, entirely separate from the screen assembly, so a screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed. That is one less thing to go wrong than on the Mate 20 Pro with its in-display sensor.
Is it safe to post a phone this large for repair?
Yes, and our mail-in service is tracked and fully insured. Packaging is where most transit damage to large devices happens, so we advise on boxing it properly when you book rather than leaving you to guess.
