A 7.2-inch phone falls differently

More screen means more mass, and more mass means more force through whichever corner hits the floor. The Mate 20 X is also routinely used two-handed and held further from the body than a normal phone, so when it goes it tends to go from higher up.

The practical result is that we see more corner impacts and more frame deformation on these than on any other Huawei. If yours has been dropped, rest it face-down on a genuinely flat surface and press each corner in turn – any rocking means the chassis has moved, and a new panel cannot bond flat to a frame that is not flat. The cooling system and what it tells you

The vapour chamber exists because this phone was built to be pushed – long gaming sessions, video, navigation. That is exactly the workload that ages a battery fastest, and it is why Mate 20 X batteries often decline sooner than owners expect for a phone of this age.

If yours runs hot during ordinary use rather than under load, that is worth investigating rather than living with. A cell losing capacity works harder to hold charge, and that inefficiency shows up as heat – which in turn accelerates the decline further.

A large OLED is a demanding fit

Big bonded panels are easy to stress during fitting. Flex a display this size even slightly out of plane while seating it and it cracks, which is why this is not a job to rush. It also means an impact can damage the panel even when the outer glass survives looking intact.

If colours have shifted, a coloured line has appeared, or an area has stopped responding to touch, that is the display rather than the glass. There is no cheaper glass-only route on a bonded OLED.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back

The Mate 20 X uses a conventional rear-mounted fingerprint reader rather than an in-display sensor. It is entirely separate from the screen assembly, so a screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards – one less thing to go wrong compared with the Mate 20 Pro.

Battery replacement at £65

The Mate 20 X carried a very large battery to drive a very large screen, and endurance was a genuine selling point. That makes the decline obvious when it comes. The cell is physically substantial and bonded across a wide area, so it has to be eased out patiently rather than levered – force on a chassis this size risks creasing the panel.

Confirm the battery is the problem first. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during gaming, video or navigation – which on this phone is exactly what you bought it for.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the USB-C cable, then the mains plug, and check it is a proper high-wattage charger – a phone with a battery this large will show as connected to a small plug while gaining almost nothing. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Our £59 charging port repair is the last answer, not the first.

Is a Huawei Mate 20 X worth repairing?

On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself. What we check before your Mate 20 X goes back

A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. Before a Mate 20 X leaves us we test touch response into all four corners, the fingerprint reader, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the front and rear cameras, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor, along with the cooling system under sustained load.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Seated slightly out of position it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call.
