The waterfall display and why it costs £199

The Mate 40 Pro has one of the steepest curved screens ever fitted to a phone – the glass falls away almost vertically at both edges rather than gently rounding off. It looks striking and it makes the repair genuinely demanding.

A panel curved that severely is bonded around the sides of the frame and has to be released with controlled heat, then re-bonded evenly across a complex surface. Get the heat wrong and you damage the flex cables; get the bonding wrong and the panel lifts at an edge within weeks. It is not a job to hand to whoever is cheapest, and the price reflects both the part and the care it demands.

Steep curves and what happens in a drop

The same curve that makes the phone look good makes it vulnerable to edge impacts. A Mate 40 Pro that lands on its side frequently damages the display even where the glass appears intact, because the panel wraps around the point of impact.

If colours have shifted, a coloured line has appeared, or an area has stopped responding to touch, that is the display rather than the glass. There is no cheaper glass-only route on a bonded curved OLED, and anyone offering one is either quoting for a different phone or planning something that will not survive.

In-display fingerprint and 3D face unlock

Like the Mate 20 Pro before it, this phone carries two biometric systems: a fingerprint reader behind the display and a genuine depth-sensing face unlock array in the notch. Both need attention during a screen replacement.

The new panel has to be seated correctly against the fingerprint sensor and enrolment tested afterwards, or you get a flawless screen and a reader that recognises nothing. The face unlock module has to be transferred and re-seated precisely, and a fraction out leaves unlock working intermittently. We test both before any Mate 40 Pro leaves us, and it is a fair question to ask anywhere else you get a quote.

Battery replacement at £65

The Mate 40 Pro supports very fast wired and wireless charging, and cells that spend their lives being charged quickly age faster than those charged gently. At £65 a replacement is straightforward, and it is the repair most of these will eventually want.

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly. Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault first: a worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls.

Charging faults: the free checks

Change the USB-C cable, then change the mains plug and check it is a proper high-wattage charger rather than a small spare – an underpowered plug will show the phone as connected while charging painfully slowly, which looks exactly like a hardware fault. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which we clear at no charge. Our £59 charging port repair is the last answer, not the first.

Ghost touch on a waterfall display

If a Mate 40 Pro starts registering taps nobody made – apps launching by themselves, characters appearing in the keyboard, scrolling that will not settle – that is ghost touch, and on a screen curved this steeply it is very often a fitting problem rather than a software one.

The panel has to be bonded evenly all the way around a severe curve. Where the adhesive is uneven or the display is seated under any tension, the digitiser interprets that constant pressure as a finger. It typically appears days or weeks after a repair rather than immediately, which is why owners rarely connect the two. A correctly bonded panel does not behave this way, and anything we fit is covered for 12 months if it does.

What we check before your Mate 40 Pro goes back

A screen replacement here is not finished when the display lights up. We test touch response right into the curved edges, fingerprint enrolment through the display, face unlock, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the rear cameras, wireless charging, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

Touch response at the curve is the one worth insisting on. On a display that falls away this sharply, a panel can respond perfectly across the flat centre and read inconsistently in the last few millimetres at each side – which is exactly where the gesture controls live. Testing the middle of the screen proves very little on this phone.
