The Huawei Mate 40 is the model people most often confuse with the Mate 40 Pro, and the difference matters when you get a quote. The two use different display assemblies, and – counter-intuitively – the standard Mate 40 is the more expensive of the pair to re-screen. The reason has nothing to do with which phone was the flagship, and it is worth understanding before you accept anyone’s price.

Mate 40 or Mate 40 Pro? Check the screen edges

The quickest way to tell is to look at the sides of the display. The Pro’s glass falls away almost vertically at both edges in what Huawei called a waterfall design. The standard Mate 40 curves far more gently – noticeable, but nothing like as dramatic.

Settings, then About phone, confirms it outright. It is worth establishing before you ring anywhere, because the two take entirely different display assemblies and a panel ordered against the wrong model simply will not fit.

Why panel prices do not always follow the model tier

People reasonably expect the Pro to cost more to re-screen. On these two it does not always work out that way, because panel pricing follows supply as much as specification. The Mate 40 Pro sold in larger numbers and stayed in circulation longer, so replacement panels for it are more plentiful. The standard Mate 40 is the scarcer part, and scarce parts cost more.

If a repairer quotes you the same figure for both, they are either not distinguishing between them or not pricing accurately.

The in-display fingerprint sensor

The Mate 40 reads your fingerprint through the display, using a sensor mounted behind the panel. A screen replacement has to seat the new panel correctly against it and retest enrolment afterwards.

Otherwise the phone comes back with a perfect screen and a fingerprint reader that no longer recognises anything, which the owner discovers the next time they pick it up rather than in the shop. We test enrolment and unlock before any Mate 40 leaves us.

What a drop does to a curved OLED

The curve means the panel wraps around the edges of the frame, so an impact on the side transmits into the display. A Mate 40 that lands on its edge frequently damages the panel even where the glass looks undamaged.

Shifted colours, a coloured line down the screen, or an area that has stopped responding to touch all mean the display rather than the glass. There is no cheaper glass-only route on a bonded OLED – anyone offering one is either quoting for a different handset or planning something that will not last.

Fast charging and the battery

The Mate 40 supports very rapid wired charging, which is convenient and does mean the cell spends its life being charged hard. Cells charged quickly age faster than those charged gently, and owners often notice decline sooner than they expect.

At £65 a replacement is straightforward. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly. Confirm the battery is at fault first: a worn cell copes with messaging and browsing and then drops sharply under camera use, navigation or video calls.

Charging faults: check these before paying

Change the USB-C cable, then the mains plug – and check it is the proper high-wattage charger, because an underpowered spare will show the phone as connected while charging painfully slowly. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Only after all three is our £59 charging port repair the right answer.

Is a Huawei Mate 40 worth repairing?

On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once, and we will tell you when you have reached that point rather than quoting for all of them and hoping you do not run the numbers. If the phone holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off.

Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself. What we check before your Mate 40 goes back

A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. We test touch response right into the curved edges, fingerprint enrolment and unlock, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the rear cameras, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Seated slightly out of position it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call.
