The fingerprint sensor is on the back

The Mate 9 has a conventional fingerprint reader on the rear panel, entirely separate from the display. A screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards.

Is a Mate 9 still worth repairing?

What it will not do is run the newest software features, and some applications have stopped supporting devices this old and will no longer update.

Liquid damage on an older handset

The Mate 9 has no meaningful water resistance, and on a phone of this age the margin for error is smaller still – seals and adhesives that were never designed to keep liquid out have had years to degrade further.

If it gets wet, switch it off at once and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep turning it on to test it, because power through a wet board is what turns a recoverable phone into a dead one. Rice achieves nothing useful. Getting the handset to us quickly, so the board can be properly cleaned before corrosion establishes itself, is the only thing that genuinely improves the odds.
