The glass back is the thing to watch

Huawei gave the Nova 3 a glass rear panel at a price point where plastic was the norm, and it is a large part of why the phone looked more expensive than it was. It is also why these arrive with us cracked front and back far more often than plastic-backed rivals.

A plastic-backed phone scuffs when it lands. A glass-backed one spiders. If your rear panel has cracked, mention it when you get in touch – loose glass at the back can work its way into the frame over time, and it is far easier to deal with before that happens than after.

Four cameras, twice the exposure

Two lenses on the back and two on the front means more glass that can be compromised in a drop. The rear pair sit under a shared cover, so one crack lets dust reach both assemblies at once – and photographs going soft or hazy after an accident usually points there rather than at software.

The front pair matter too if you use portrait mode on selfies, because the second front lens provides the depth information that effect relies on. If your background blur has stopped working while ordinary selfies look fine, that is the likely cause and it is not a software problem.

An LCD screen, and the free test that comes with it

The Nova 3 uses an LCD with a conventional backlight, which keeps the screen replacement at £99 and gives you a diagnostic that costs nothing.

If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle. If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back

A conventional reader on the rear panel, entirely separate from the display. A screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards – unlike Huawei’s later models with in-display sensors, where a rushed fitting can leave a perfect screen paired with a reader that recognises nothing.

Battery replacement at £59

These are now several years into service and batteries are the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault before booking. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, check available storage first – a nearly full handset crawls whatever the cell is doing.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the cable, because after several years most originals have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which we clear at no charge. Only when all three come back clean is our £55 charging port repair the right answer.

What we check before your Nova 3 goes back

On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself.
