A curved OLED at mid-range money

The Nova 9 uses an OLED panel that curves over both long edges – a specification usually reserved for flagships. It looks excellent and it makes the phone less forgiving of a drop onto its side, because the panel wraps around the point of impact.

That is why a Nova 9 screen costs more than a Nova 5T screen despite the two sitting in the same family. An OLED costs more to manufacture than an LCD, and a curved one has to be released with controlled heat and re-bonded evenly around the frame rather than simply unclipped.

The in-display fingerprint sensor

Unlike the Nova 5T, which puts its fingerprint reader in the side power button, the Nova 9 reads your fingerprint through the display. That adds a step to any screen replacement: the new panel must be seated correctly against the sensor and enrolment retested afterwards.

Fast charging and what it does to the battery

The Nova 9 supports very rapid wired charging, and that is a genuine convenience. It also means the cell spends its life being charged hard, and cells charged quickly age faster than those charged gently. Owners of these often notice battery decline sooner than they expect for a phone of this age.

At £65 a replacement is straightforward. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Before booking, confirm the battery is the problem. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature.

Ghost touch after a poor screen repair

If the phone begins registering taps you did not make, that is ghost touch and it is not a software fault – a factory reset will not clear it. On a curved panel it is usually caused by a display seated under tension or with uneven adhesive, so the digitiser reads that constant pressure as a finger.

It frequently appears a week or two after a cheap repair rather than straight away, which is why owners rarely link the two events. A correctly fitted panel does not behave this way, and anything we fit is covered for 12 months if it does.

Charging faults: check these first

Change the USB-C cable, then change the mains plug – and make sure it is the proper high-wattage charger rather than a small spare, because an underpowered plug will show the phone as connected while charging painfully slowly. A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. We test touch response right into the curved edges, fingerprint enrolment and unlock, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the cameras, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

Touch response at the curve is the one worth insisting on. On a display that falls away at the sides, a panel can respond perfectly across the flat centre and read inconsistently in the last few millimetres at each edge – which is exactly where gesture controls live.

Is a Nova 9 worth repairing?

On a handset that otherwise works, comfortably. The Nova 9 still handles everything a mid-range phone is asked to do, and at £65 a battery it is one of the more sensible repairs in the Nova range. A £149 screen is a bigger decision, though still well below replacement cost.

Where it stops adding up is two repairs at once – a curved screen and a battery together starts to approach what the phone is worth, and we will say so rather than quoting for both and letting you work it out afterwards. Liquid damage: the first hour matters most

The Nova 9 has no meaningful water resistance. If liquid gets in, switch it off immediately and leave it off – do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived.

Power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable phone into a dead one, and it accounts for more write-offs than the liquid itself.
