The 2019 model has a small teardrop notch at the top of the screen and a round fingerprint reader on the rear panel. If yours has a camera that rises out of the top edge, you have a P Smart Z or Pro. If it has no rear fingerprint reader at all, it is likely the P Smart S. Settings, then About phone, settles it definitively in seconds – and it is worth checking before you ring anywhere.

The rear fingerprint sensor is good news

The reader sits on the back panel, entirely separate from the screen assembly. A screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards.

That matters when comparing quotes. On Huawei models with in-display readers – the P Smart S, the P40 Pro, the P50 Pro – a rushed screen fitting can leave a perfect display paired with a fingerprint sensor that recognises nothing. On the P Smart 2019 that risk simply does not exist.

The torch test that saves these phones

The P Smart 2019 uses an LCD with a conventional backlight, which gives you a free diagnostic worth running before writing the phone off. If it appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at an £89 screen replacement rather than a dead phone. On a budget handset this single free check decides an enormous number of cases.

Is it slow, or is it simply full?

Worth separating before you spend anything, because only one of them costs money. The P Smart 2019 shipped with modest storage, and once close to capacity it behaves exactly like a failing phone: apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots, everything drags and updates fail without explanation.
