What a failing mechanism sounds and feels like

Slow or hesitant movement, a grinding or buzzing noise, sticking part-way, retracting on its own, or the camera app reporting an error when you switch to selfie mode. None of that is software and no update fixes it.

A case matters more on a phone this size

On most handsets we would call a case sensible. On this one it is close to essential, because the corners and top edge are both where the damage concentrates and where the most delicate assembly lives. A case with genuinely raised corners does real work here, and against a £99 screen plus a camera mechanism it is not a close decision.

Battery replacement at £55

The P Smart Pro carried a large battery to drive a large screen, and endurance was a real selling point. After several years of daily cycling that capacity drops noticeably, and this is among the most common reasons these reach us.

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly. Confirm the battery is the problem first – a worn cell copes with messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls.

Charging faults: check these before paying

Change the cable, then the mains plug, then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which we clear at no charge. Only after all three is our £55 charging port repair the right answer, and plenty of people pay for port work a cheap cable would have solved.

What we check before your P Smart Pro goes back

A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. We test touch response into all four corners, the side fingerprint reader, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the rear cameras, the proximity sensor and – on this model especially – the pop-up camera raising and retracting smoothly under its own power.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Seated slightly out of position it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call. Owners reasonably assume that is a software bug. It is not, and it takes minutes to catch in the workshop.
