It went out on cheap contracts in enormous numbers, gave people a tall modern-looking screen at a price nothing else matched, and a great many are still in daily use. P Smart or P Smart Plus? Count the cameras

Huawei used the P Smart name across several different handsets, and mixing them up is the most common reason a repair gets delayed. The quickest check is the rear camera: the standard P Smart has two lenses, while the P Smart Plus has two on the back and two on the front.

Open Settings, then About phone, to be certain. It genuinely matters, because the models take different display assemblies and a panel ordered against the wrong name will not fit. Quote the model number when you contact us and we can confirm the correct part and price on the first conversation rather than the second.

The torch test worth running before anything else

The P Smart uses an LCD with a backlight behind it, which gives you a free diagnostic. If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If the home screen is faintly visible, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone. On a budget handset that single free check regularly decides whether a device gets repaired or thrown away.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back

The P Smart has a conventional fingerprint reader on the rear panel, entirely separate from the display. A screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards, which removes a step that causes genuine problems on Huawei’s later flagships where the sensor sits behind the screen.

Battery replacement at £65

These are now several years into service and batteries are overwhelmingly the most common reason they reach us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault first. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature.

Is it slow, or is it full?

These need different answers and only one costs money. The P Smart shipped with modest storage, and once close to capacity it behaves exactly like a failing phone: apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots, everything drags.

Move photographs off, clear cached data and uninstall what you no longer use before booking anything. It costs nothing and it resolves the complaint far more often than people expect on handsets of this age.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the cable first, because after this many years most originals have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone this age and which we clear at no charge.

Only when all three come back clean is our £59 charging port repair the right answer. On a handset at this price, paying for port work that a cheap cable would have fixed is a genuinely poor outcome.

Is a P Smart worth repairing?

For a single repair on a phone that still does what you need, yes. A £65 battery on a handset already set up the way you like it is fair money. The P Smart has no meaningful water resistance. If liquid gets in, switch it off immediately and leave it off – do not plug in a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived.

Power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable phone into a dead one, and it accounts for more write-offs than the liquid itself does. Rice is not a treatment; it draws off surface moisture while corrosion quietly spreads across the board underneath.
