Both of those change what a repair involves, and they are worth understanding before you accept a quote.

An in-display fingerprint sensor at budget money

This is the detail that catches repairers out. Most phones at this price put the fingerprint reader on the back, where a screen replacement cannot touch it. The P Smart S reads your fingerprint through the display, using a sensor mounted behind the panel.

That means a screen replacement has to seat the new panel correctly against the sensor and retest enrolment afterwards. Skip that step and the phone comes back with a flawless screen and a fingerprint reader that no longer recognises anything – something the owner discovers the next time they pick it up rather than in the shop. We test enrolment and unlock before any P Smart S leaves us, and it is worth asking about anywhere else you get a quote.

OLED, not LCD – and what that rules out

Because the panel is an OLED, the usual budget-phone torch test does not apply here. On an LCD handset you can shine a torch at a black screen and often see the faint home screen, proving the backlight has failed rather than the phone. An OLED has no backlight, so a blank screen needs a proper diagnosis instead of that shortcut.

An OLED can also be damaged by a drop even when the outer glass survives looking intact. If colours have shifted, a coloured line has appeared, or an area has stopped responding to touch, that is the panel rather than the glass, and the full assembly needs replacing. There is no cheaper glass-only route on a bonded OLED.

Which P Smart do you actually have?

Huawei used the P Smart name across several very different handsets, and mixing them up is the most common reason a repair on these gets delayed. The P Smart S is the one with the OLED screen and no fingerprint sensor on the rear panel – if yours has a round reader on the back, you have a different model.

Open Settings, then About phone, to be certain. A display ordered against the wrong P Smart simply will not fit, and the delay while the right one is sourced is entirely avoidable.

Battery replacement at £55

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together. On a handset at this price a £55 battery is easy arithmetic when the cell is genuinely the problem.

Confirm that it is. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, check how full the storage is first – a nearly full handset crawls whatever the battery is doing, and clearing space costs nothing.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the USB-C cable, because after several years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone that lives in a pocket and which we clear at no charge.

Only when all three come back clean is our £55 charging port repair the right answer. On a handset at this price, paying for port work that a cheap replacement cable would have fixed is a genuinely poor outcome.

Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself.
