The glass back is the thing to watch

Huawei gave the P10 Lite a glass rear panel at a price point where almost everything else was plastic, and it is a large part of why the phone looked so good. It is also why these arrive with us cracked front and back more often than their plastic-backed rivals.

A plastic-backed budget phone scuffs when it lands. A glass-backed one spiders. If your rear panel has cracked, it is worth mentioning when you get in touch – loose glass at the back can work its way into the frame over time, and it is far easier to deal with before that happens than after.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back, and that is helpful

Unlike the standard P10, which puts its fingerprint pad on the front below the display, the P10 Lite has a round sensor on the rear panel. It never comes near the screen assembly.

That means a screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards. On the standard P10, the front sensor has to be disconnected, transferred and reconnected during a screen repair, and a rushed job can leave a working display paired with a reader that no longer responds. On the Lite that risk does not exist.

The torch test that rescues these phones

The P10 Lite uses an LCD with a backlight behind it, which gives you a free check worth running before writing the phone off. If it appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when plugged into a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone. On budget handsets this check genuinely decides whether a device gets repaired or thrown away, and it costs nothing.

Battery replacement at £55

These are now several years old and batteries are far and away the most common reason they reach us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault first. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, check available storage – the P10 Lite shipped with modest capacity and a nearly full handset crawls whatever the battery is doing.

Is it slow, or is it simply full?

Worth separating before spending anything, because the answers are completely different. A phone close to storage capacity behaves exactly like a failing one: apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots, everything drags, updates fail without explanation.

Move your photographs off, clear cached data and uninstall what you no longer use. It costs nothing, and on budget handsets of this age it resolves the complaint far more often than any repair would.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the cable, because after this many years most originals have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is close to universal on a phone this age and which we clear at no charge. Is a P10 Lite worth repairing?

For a single repair on a phone that still does what you need, yes. A £55 battery is fair money on a handset already set up the way you like it. If the handset holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off. On budget phones that is regularly the thing genuinely worth paying for.

It is worth mentioning after a repair in particular. A replacement panel is bonded with fresh adhesive that takes a day or two to fully cure, so a knock in that first window is more likely to lift an edge than the same knock would be a month later.
