That decision is the main thing separating it from the P10 Lite, and it matters when a screen needs replacing.

P10 or P10 Lite? Look at the front

The quickest check takes a second. The P10 has a fingerprint sensor on the front, in a slim pad below the screen. The P10 Lite has no front sensor at all – its fingerprint reader is a round pad on the back.

That single difference tells you which phone you are holding. Settings, then About phone, confirms it outright if you want certainty, and it is worth doing before you ring anywhere. The two take different display assemblies and different fingerprint components, so a quote for one is meaningless for the other.

Why the front sensor matters for a screen repair

Because it sits in the bottom bezel, immediately below the display, the P10’s fingerprint pad has to be disconnected, transferred and reconnected during a screen replacement. It is a genuine step rather than an afterthought, and a rushed job can leave you with a working screen and a fingerprint reader that no longer responds.

We test enrolment and unlock before any P10 leaves us. On the P10 Lite, where the sensor lives on the rear panel and never comes near the display, this is simply not an issue – which is worth bearing in mind when comparing quotes between the two.

An LCD screen, and the free test that comes with it

The P10 uses an LCD with a conventional backlight. That keeps the repair at £95, and it hands you a diagnostic check worth running before you write the phone off.

If the handset appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle. If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the phone. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead device.

The Leica cameras and what a drop does to them

The P10’s dual camera system was a large part of its appeal, and the rear glass over it is worth attention after any accident. A crack across the camera housing lets dust reach the lens assemblies, and photographs that have gone soft or hazy since a drop usually point there rather than at software or age.

If your pictures have deteriorated after an impact, mention it when you get in touch. It is the kind of fault owners assume is simply the phone getting old, and it goes unreported far more often than it should.

Battery replacement at £55

These are now well into their second half of life and batteries are overwhelmingly the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault first. A worn cell copes with messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, that is more likely storage and software than the cell.

Charging faults: cable, plug, then lint

Change the cable first, because after this many years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone of this age and which we clear at no charge. Is a P10 worth repairing?

For a single repair on a handset that still does what you need, yes. A £55 battery on a phone in otherwise sound condition is fair money and transforms how it feels to use. What we will not claim is that it keeps pace with current software – some applications have stopped supporting devices this age and will no longer update.

Two repairs at once takes you past the point where the sums work, and we will say so rather than quoting for both. If the phone holds photographs never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off.

Fitting a screen protector after a repair

Wait a day or two before applying one. A replacement panel is bonded to the frame with fresh adhesive, and pressing a protector down firmly before it has fully cured can lift an edge or leave the display sitting slightly out of plane.

Once it has settled, a plain tempered glass protector is worth having on a flat-screened phone like the P10. It sits flush, it absorbs the small knocks that chip a corner of the glass, and replacing a cheap protector is a far better outcome than paying for another screen. Worth pairing with a case that has genuinely raised corners, since the corners are where impact energy concentrates in a drop.
