How we protect your data?

The Huawei P20 is the model people most often confuse with the P20 Pro, and the difference matters: they use different display technology, take different parts and carry different repair prices. At £119 for a screen replacement the standard P20 is substantially cheaper to put right, and there is a good reason for that.

How much does a Huawei P20 repair cost?

Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:

  • Screen replacement – £119
  • Battery replacement – £59
  • Charging port repair – £49
  • Diagnostic service – £15

Each covers the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee, with nothing added at the end.

P20 or P20 Pro? Establish this first

The quickest visual check is the rear camera. The P20 Pro has three lenses stacked vertically; the standard P20 has two. That single difference tells you which phone you are holding in about a second.

If you want certainty, open Settings, then About phone, and read the model number. It is worth confirming before you ring anywhere, because the two take entirely different display assemblies – the Pro uses OLED and the standard P20 uses an LCD. A quote for one is meaningless for the other, and a panel ordered against the wrong name will not fit.

An LCD screen, and the advantage that brings

The £60 gap between a P20 and a P20 Pro screen comes down almost entirely to panel type. OLED generates light at each individual pixel and costs considerably more to manufacture. The P20 uses an LCD with a conventional backlight behind it.

That gives you something the Pro owners do not have: a free diagnostic test. If your P20 appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle. If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the phone. Everything on it is intact, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead handset. A great many perfectly repairable phones get written off because nobody ran that check.

The fingerprint sensor sits below the screen

The P20 has a physical fingerprint sensor in the chin beneath the display rather than the in-display reader used on the later P30 series. It has to be transferred and reconnected during a screen replacement, and we test it before the phone goes back, but it is a more robust arrangement than reading a fingerprint through the panel itself.

Battery replacement at £59

These are now several years into service and batteries are far and away the most common reason they reach us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Check the battery is genuinely the problem first. A worn cell manages messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the giveaway. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, look at available storage before assuming the cell, because a nearly full handset behaves sluggishly regardless of battery health.

Charging faults: cable, plug, then lint

Change the USB-C cable first, because after this many years most original cables have failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is very common on a phone of this age and which we clear at no charge. Only after all three is our £49 charging port repair the right answer.

Is a P20 worth repairing in 2026?

On a handset that otherwise works, generally yes. A £59 battery on a phone you like and cannot easily replace like-for-like is easy arithmetic, and £119 for a screen is well below what a comparable replacement costs. Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once, and we will tell you when you are at that point rather than quoting for all of them.

Check your storage before booking anything

A meaningful share of the P20s brought to us as “failing” turn out to be full rather than faulty. Once a handset is close to capacity it slows noticeably, apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots and system updates fail without explanation. None of that is a hardware fault and no repair addresses it.

Move your photographs off, clear cached data and uninstall what you no longer use before spending anything. It costs nothing and it resolves the complaint often enough that we would rather tell you than take a booking. If the phone still misbehaves afterwards, that is when a diagnostic earns its keep.

What our 12 month guarantee covers

Every repair carries 12 months of cover on the part and the workmanship alike. If a replacement screen develops dead touch zones or a new battery will not hold charge in normal use, it comes straight back to us and we sort it at no cost. A fresh drop is a new accident rather than a failed repair, and we say so plainly rather than hiding it in the small print.

How our mail-in repair service works

You do not need to be anywhere near Essex to use us, and the process is deliberately simple. Get in touch describing the fault and the model, and we will give you an indication of price and timescale before anything is posted. You send the phone in tracked and insured, we diagnose it properly on arrival, and we come back to you with a fixed price.

Nothing happens until you approve that price. If the fault turns out to be something other than you expected – and on a phone of this age it sometimes is – you hear about it before any work starts, not on the invoice afterwards. If you decide not to go ahead, we return the handset.

Back up before you post it

Worth doing before any repair. Screen and battery work leaves your data untouched and we take care not to disturb it, but a handset that already has a fault can behave unpredictably, and a backup costs nothing but a few minutes of your time. If the display is too damaged to navigate, tell us when you get in touch and we will talk through the options with you first.

Huawei P20 Repairs: Common Questions

How do I tell a P20 from a P20 Pro?

Look at the rear camera. The Pro has three lenses stacked vertically; the standard P20 has two. That tells you in about a second. Settings, then About phone, confirms the model number outright if you want certainty - and it matters, because the two take entirely different display assemblies.

Why is a P20 screen cheaper than a P20 Pro screen?

Panel type. The Pro uses OLED, which generates light at each individual pixel and costs far more to manufacture. The standard P20 uses an LCD with a conventional backlight. That single difference accounts for almost the whole £60 gap between the two repairs.

My P20 is black but still rings. Is it dead?

Probably not. Take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the screen at an angle - if the home screen is faintly visible, the backlight has failed rather than the phone. Everything on it is intact. This test only works on LCD handsets like the standard P20, not on the OLED Pro.

Will a screen repair affect my fingerprint sensor?

The P20 has a physical sensor in the chin below the display rather than an in-display reader, so it is a separate component that we transfer and reconnect during the repair. We test it before the phone goes back. It is a more robust arrangement than reading a fingerprint through the panel itself.

Is a P20 worth repairing now?

On a handset that otherwise works, generally yes. A £59 battery on a phone you like and cannot easily replace like-for-like is easy arithmetic, and £119 for a screen sits well below a comparable replacement. Two or three faults at once is where it stops adding up, and we will say so.
