Is a P30 Pro worth repairing?

For most owners, yes. The hardware still does everything asked of a modern phone, the camera is the reason people keep them, and at £179 for a screen or £59 for a battery the repair sits well below what a comparable handset would cost you to replace.

Where it stops adding up is several faults at once. A screen, a battery and a charging port together takes you past the point where the arithmetic works, and we will tell you that rather than quoting for all three and hoping you do not run the numbers yourself. If the phone holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask us about data recovery before writing it off – that is sometimes the thing genuinely worth paying for.

The periscope camera nobody else had

The P30 Pro introduced a periscope zoom lens – the camera sits sideways inside the phone and light is bounced through it by a prism, which is how Huawei fitted 5x optical zoom into a body this thin. It was genuinely ahead of its time and it is still the reason many owners refuse to give the phone up.

For repairs, it means the rear glass matters more than usual. A crack across the camera housing can let dust reach the prism assembly, and zoom shots that have gone soft or hazy after a drop usually point there rather than at a software problem. If your long-range photos have deteriorated since an accident, mention it when you get in touch – it is the kind of fault owners assume is the phone getting old.

The in-display fingerprint sensor and screen repairs

The P30 Pro reads your fingerprint through the display itself, using an optical sensor mounted behind the panel. That introduces a step in a screen replacement that a rushed workshop will skip: the new panel has to be seated correctly against the sensor and fingerprint enrolment tested afterwards.

A phone can come back with a flawless screen and a fingerprint reader that no longer recognises anything, and the owner finds out the next time they pick it up rather than in the shop. Curved OLED, and why the screen costs £179

The panel is a curved OLED, which is both more expensive to manufacture than a flat LCD and considerably more delicate to fit. The curve means the glass is bonded around the edges of the frame, so the assembly has to be heated, released and re-bonded rather than simply unclipped.

It also means the phone is less forgiving of a drop onto its edge. A P30 Pro that lands on a corner frequently damages the panel even where the glass looks intact – if colours have shifted, a line has appeared, or part of the screen has stopped responding to touch, that is the display rather than the glass.

Battery replacement at £59

These phones are now several years into service, so batteries are far and away the most common reason they reach us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive strips that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.

Before booking, confirm the battery is genuinely at fault. A worn cell handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone feels slow rather than short of charge, that is usually storage and software rather than the cell.

Charging faults: the free checks first

Change the USB-C cable, then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is the single most common cause of a cable that will not seat properly and which we clear at no charge. Ghost touch, and why a cheap curved screen causes it

If a P30 Pro starts registering taps nobody made – apps opening on their own, the keyboard typing characters you did not press, scrolling that will not stop – that is ghost touch, and on this model it is almost always a symptom of a poorly fitted curved panel rather than a software fault.

The cause is pressure. A curved display has to be bonded evenly around the sides of the frame. If the adhesive is uneven, or the panel is seated with any tension in it, the digitiser reads that constant pressure as a finger. It often appears days or weeks after a repair rather than immediately, which is why people rarely connect the two. A properly bonded panel does not do this, and if a screen we fitted ever did, it would come back to us under the 12 month guarantee.

Back up your phone before you send it in

Worth doing before any repair, anywhere. Most screen and battery work leaves your data completely untouched, and we take care not to disturb it – but a phone that arrives with an existing fault can behave unpredictably, and a backup costs you nothing but a little time.
