Curved on all four sides – and why that matters

Most curved phones round off the two long edges and leave the top and bottom flat. The P40 Pro curves all four, which means the panel is bonded to the frame around its entire perimeter. There is no flat edge to lift from, no straightforward starting point, and the adhesive has to be released with controlled heat right the way around.

Refitting demands the same care in reverse. Bond it unevenly anywhere along that perimeter and the panel lifts at a corner or develops ghost touch within weeks. It is not a job to give to whoever is cheapest, and the price reflects the time and risk as much as the part.

What a drop does to a four-sided curve

There is nowhere on this phone where the glass meets the frame flat, so an impact anywhere on the perimeter transmits into the panel. A P40 Pro that lands on any edge frequently damages the display even where the glass looks completely intact.

If colours have shifted, a coloured line has appeared, or an area has stopped responding to touch, that is the display rather than the glass. There is no cheaper glass-only route on a bonded curved OLED, and anyone offering one is either quoting for a different phone or planning something that will not survive.

The in-display fingerprint sensor

The P40 Pro reads your fingerprint through the display, using a sensor mounted behind the panel. A screen replacement has to seat the new panel correctly against that sensor and retest enrolment afterwards, or you end up with a flawless screen and a reader that recognises nothing.

We test enrolment and unlock before any P40 Pro leaves us. If you are comparing quotes elsewhere, it is a fair question to ask, because it is the step a hurried workshop skips.

Ghost touch, and why this model is prone to it

If the phone starts registering taps nobody made – apps opening on their own, characters appearing in the keyboard, scrolling that will not settle – that is ghost touch. It is not software and a factory reset will not clear it.

On a panel bonded around all four sides, uneven adhesive or a display seated under tension gives the digitiser constant pressure to misread as a finger. It typically appears days or weeks after a repair rather than immediately, which is why owners rarely connect the two events. A correctly bonded panel does not do this, and anything we fit is covered for 12 months if it does.

The camera housing after a drop

The P40 Pro’s rear camera array sits under a shared glass cover, and a crack across it lets dust reach several lens assemblies at once. Photographs that have gone soft or hazy since an accident usually point there rather than at software or age.

On a phone people bought largely for its camera, that is worth raising when you get in touch rather than assuming the handset is simply getting old.

Battery and charging

The £69 battery replacement deals with a cell bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered. The phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled. Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault first – a worn cell handles messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls.

For charging problems, work through the free checks. Change the USB-C cable, change the mains plug and make sure it is a proper fast charger rather than a small spare, then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which we clear at no charge. Is a Huawei P40 Pro worth repairing?

On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once, and we will tell you when you have reached that point rather than quoting for all of them and hoping you do not run the numbers. If the phone holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off.

Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself.
