Huawei’s imaging was at its peak with the P40 generation, and low-light performance in particular still stands comparison with far newer phones. That is the single most common reason owners tell us they are keeping one rather than moving on.

For repairs it means the rear glass matters. A crack across the camera housing lets dust reach the lens assemblies, and photographs that have gone soft or hazy since a drop usually point there rather than at software. If your pictures have deteriorated after an accident, mention it – owners frequently assume it is the phone ageing and never raise it.

The in-display fingerprint sensor

The P40 reads your fingerprint through the display using a sensor mounted behind the panel. That introduces a step in a screen replacement which a hurried workshop will skip: the new panel must be seated correctly against the sensor and enrolment tested afterwards.

Otherwise the phone comes back with a perfect screen and a fingerprint reader that recognises nothing, discovered the next time you pick it up rather than in the shop. We test enrolment and unlock before any P40 leaves us.

OLED, and what a drop does to it

The P40 uses an OLED panel, which produces its excellent contrast and which is less forgiving than an LCD. A drop can damage the display even where the outer glass survives looking intact.

If colours have shifted, a coloured line has appeared, or part of the screen has stopped responding to touch, that is the panel rather than the glass and the full assembly needs replacing. There is no cheaper glass-only option on a bonded OLED – anyone offering one is either quoting for a different phone or planning something that will not last.

Battery replacement at £69

These are now several years into service and batteries are the most common reason they arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Confirm the battery is genuinely at fault first. A worn cell copes with messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls – and on a phone people keep specifically for its camera, that is exactly when you notice. Sudden collapse under load is the signature. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, check available storage before assuming the cell.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the USB-C cable, then change the mains plug and make sure it is a proper fast charger rather than a small spare, because an underpowered plug will show the phone as connected while charging very slowly. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which we clear at no charge. Only after all three is our £65 charging port repair the right answer.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Seated slightly out of position, it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call. Owners reasonably assume that is a software bug. It is not, and it takes minutes to catch in the workshop.

Back up before you send it in

Worth doing before any repair, anywhere. Screen and battery work leaves your data untouched and we take care not to disturb it, but a handset that already has a fault can behave unpredictably and a backup costs nothing but a little time.

If the display is too damaged to navigate, say so when you get in touch rather than struggling with it – there are usually options, and it is a far easier conversation before the phone is posted than after.
