The Huawei P8 Lite was one of the biggest-selling budget phones Britain has ever had. It undercut everything comparable, it did the basics well, and it went into an enormous number of pockets. Enough of them survive that we still repair these regularly – and at £79 for a screen and £49 for a battery, doing so is cheap.

Where a repair genuinely makes sense

Being straight about this is more useful than a sales pitch. The P8 Lite is around a decade old. It no longer receives software updates, a great deal of current software will not install on it, and much of what does will run badly. A repair does not change any of that.

What it can do is keep a working phone working for a specific job. A spare handset. An emergency phone kept in a car. A first phone for a child who needs calls and texts and nothing more. A device somebody elderly is comfortable with and does not want to relearn. Or simply a phone you need alive long enough to rescue what is on it. In those situations £49 is fair money. If you want a phone that keeps up with current apps, this is not where to spend it.

The photographs are usually the real value

Phones of this generation were bought before automatic cloud backup was something everybody had switched on, which means a P8 Lite very often holds pictures and messages that exist nowhere else. On a device worth very little, that content can be worth a great deal.

If your handset will not switch on, ask about data recovery before writing it off. It is frequently the more sensible thing to pay for than a repair, and we will tell you honestly which route gets you what you actually want.

The torch test that rescues these

The P8 Lite uses an LCD with a backlight, so there is a free check worth running first. If the phone seems dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or appears when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If the home screen is faintly visible, the backlight has failed rather than the phone. Everything on it is intact, and you are looking at a screen repair rather than a dead device. On the cheapest handsets we see, this single free check decides an enormous number of cases.

Is it slow, or is it simply full?

The P8 Lite shipped with very little storage by any modern standard, and once close to capacity it behaves exactly like a failing phone: apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots, everything drags, updates fail silently.

Move photographs off, clear cached data and uninstall what you no longer use before spending anything. It costs nothing and on handsets of this vintage it resolves the complaint more often than any repair would. If the phone still misbehaves afterwards, that is when a diagnostic earns its keep.

Battery replacement at £49

After a decade the original cell holds very little of its designed capacity, and this is far and away the most common reason these still arrive with us. The cell is bonded in and has to be eased out slowly rather than levered, because a chassis this old is easy to damage in the process. The phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.

Change the cable before anything else – after this long virtually every original cable has failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is close to guaranteed on a phone this age and which we clear at no charge. Only then is our £49 charging port repair the right answer.

The same guarantee, whatever the phone cost

Every repair carries 12 months of cover on the part and the workmanship, and that applies just as much to a decade-old budget handset as to a current flagship. The parts cost less because the components cost less, not because there is a cheaper tier of service for cheaper phones. There is not.

What if it is not worth repairing?

We say so rather than quoting for everything. Two faults at once on a P8 Lite takes you well past the point where the sums work, and we would rather lose the job than take more than the phone is worth without saying so first.

Why so many P8 Lites are still around

This was one of the biggest-selling budget phones Britain has ever had, and the sheer number sold is why we still see them a decade on. Most went out on cheap contracts to people who wanted a phone that worked rather than a phone that impressed, and a good proportion of those owners simply never had a reason to change.

That matters for parts. If you have been told a P8 Lite is unrepairable because parts are unavailable, it is worth asking us before accepting that.

What we check before your P8 Lite goes back

A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. We test touch response into all four corners, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the cameras and the proximity sensor that blanks the display during calls. That last one is what rushed repairs miss: seated slightly out of position it leaves the screen lit against your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call. It looks like a software fault and it is not, and it takes minutes to catch in the workshop.
