The Huawei P9 Lite was, for a couple of years, one of the most common phones in Britain. It hit a price point that undercut everything comparable and it sold in enormous numbers, which is why we still see them regularly. At £79 for a screen replacement and £49 for a battery, they remain among the cheapest repairs we offer.

How much does a Huawei P9 Lite repair cost?

Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:

  • Screen replacement – £79
  • Battery replacement – £49
  • Charging port repair – £49
  • Diagnostic service – £15

Each covers the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee. The £15 diagnostic applies only to faults outside this list.

P9 or P9 Lite? It is worth checking

The P9 has a dual camera on the back – two lenses side by side, a Leica-branded arrangement that was unusual at the time. The P9 Lite has a single lens. That is the fastest way to tell them apart, and Settings then About phone confirms it outright.

The distinction matters because the two take different display assemblies, and a panel ordered against the wrong name will not fit. Quote the model number when you contact us and we can confirm the right part and price on the first call rather than the second.

The torch test before you give up on it

The P9 Lite uses an LCD with a backlight, which gives you a free check worth running before writing the phone off. If it appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when plugged into a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If the home screen is faintly visible, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at a screen replacement rather than a dead phone. On a device this cheap, that single free check is genuinely the difference between a working handset and one that goes in a bin.

The honest position on a phone this old

The P9 Lite is now approaching a decade old, and we would rather set expectations properly than take money from you. The hardware still handles calls, messaging and basic browsing, but a great deal of current software will not install on it, and much of what does will run poorly.

Where a repair genuinely makes sense is for a defined job. A phone for a child, a spare handset, a device for somebody who wants calls and texts and nothing more, or a phone kept purely to reach the photographs on it. In those situations £49 for a battery is perfectly reasonable money. If you want a phone that keeps up with current apps, this is not the device to spend on and we will tell you so.

Is it slow, or is it just full?

Worth separating, because they need different answers and only one of them costs anything. The P9 Lite shipped with very little storage by current standards, and once close to capacity it behaves exactly like a failing phone: apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots, everything drags.

Move photographs off, clear cached data and uninstall what you no longer use before booking anything. It costs nothing and it resolves the complaint more often than people expect on handsets of this vintage.

Battery replacement at £49

After this many years the original cell holds a small fraction of its designed capacity, and this is far and away the most common reason these still reach us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

A worn cell manages light use and then collapses under any real load. If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, a new battery will not change that.

Charging faults on an older handset

Change the cable first – after this long virtually every original cable has failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is close to guaranteed on a phone that has spent years in pockets and bags, and which we clear at no charge. Only then is our £49 charging port repair the right answer.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back

The P9 Lite has a conventional fingerprint reader on the rear panel, entirely separate from the display. A screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards, which is one less thing to worry about compared with later Huawei models where the sensor sits behind the screen.

What if it is beyond economic repair?

We tell you rather than quoting for everything. Two faults at once on a phone this old takes you past the point where the arithmetic works. What is stored on it usually matters far more than the hardware – old photographs and messages that exist nowhere else can often still be recovered even from a handset that will never work properly again, and our data recovery service covers that.

What our 12 month guarantee covers

Every repair we carry out on a P9 Lite carries 12 months of cover on both the part and the workmanship – exactly the same guarantee we give a phone costing ten times as much. If a replacement screen develops dead touch zones, or a new battery will not hold charge in normal use, it comes straight back to us and we sort it at no cost to you.

A fresh drop is a new accident rather than a failed repair, and we say so plainly rather than hiding it in small print. The parts cost less because the components cost less, not because there is a cheaper tier of service for budget handsets. There is not, and we would not want there to be.

Huawei P9 Lite Repairs: Straight Answers

How do I tell a P9 from a P9 Lite?

Look at the back. The P9 has a dual camera - two lenses side by side in a Leica-branded arrangement. The P9 Lite has a single lens. Settings, then About phone, confirms it outright, and it matters because the two take different display assemblies.

My P9 Lite is black but still rings. Is it worth fixing?

Check with a torch first. In a dark room, shine it at the screen at an angle - if the home screen is faintly visible, the backlight has failed rather than the phone, and everything on it is intact. On a device this cheap that free check is the difference between a working handset and one that goes in the bin.

Is a P9 Lite worth repairing in 2026?

Only for a defined job, and we would rather say so than take your money. As a phone for a child, a spare handset, or a device for someone who wants calls and texts, £49 for a battery is reasonable. A great deal of current software will not install on it, and much of what does runs poorly.

My P9 Lite is slow. Would a repair help?

Check the storage first, because this model shipped with very little by current standards and a nearly full phone behaves exactly like a failing one. Move photographs off and clear cached data - it costs nothing and resolves the complaint more often than people expect on handsets this old.

Will a screen repair affect the fingerprint sensor?

No. The P9 Lite has a conventional reader on the rear panel, entirely separate from the display, so a screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed. On later Huawei models where the sensor sits behind the screen, that is a genuine risk - here it is not.

What if my P9 Lite cannot be economically repaired?

We tell you rather than quoting for everything. Two faults at once on a phone this old takes you past the point where the arithmetic works. What is stored on it usually matters far more - old photographs that exist nowhere else can often still be recovered even from a handset that will never work again.
