How we protect your data?

The Huawei P9 Plus was the bigger, more ambitious version of the phone that started Huawei’s partnership with Leica. It had a 5.5-inch AMOLED display and – unusually for 2016 – a pressure-sensitive screen that could tell how hard you pressed. Both of those set it apart from the standard P9, and both affect how it is repaired.

How much does a Huawei P9 Plus repair cost?

Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:

  • Screen replacement – £89
  • Battery replacement – £49
  • Charging port repair – £49
  • Diagnostic service – £15

Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee. The £15 diagnostic applies only to faults outside this list.

An AMOLED screen, not an LCD

This is the key difference from the standard P9, which uses an LCD. It matters because the usual budget-phone torch test does not work here – on an LCD you can shine a torch at a black screen and often see the faint home screen, proving the backlight has failed rather than the phone. An AMOLED has no backlight, so a blank screen needs a proper diagnosis instead.

AMOLED panels can also be damaged by a drop even when the outer glass survives looking intact. If colours have shifted, a coloured line has appeared, or an area has stopped responding to touch, that is the panel rather than the glass and the full assembly needs replacing.

The pressure-sensitive display

The P9 Plus could detect how firmly you pressed the screen, a feature very few phones of its era offered. It relies on a sensing layer within the display assembly, which means a replacement panel has to support it – a cheap generic screen may restore touch perfectly while quietly losing pressure sensitivity altogether.

If you use that feature, say so when you get in touch and we will make sure the assembly we fit supports it.

The Leica cameras after a drop

The P9 generation launched Huawei’s Leica partnership, pairing a colour sensor with a monochrome one. The rear glass over that housing deserves attention after any accident – a crack there lets dust reach the lens assemblies, and photographs going soft or hazy since a drop usually points there rather than at software or age.

Battery replacement at £49

After this many years the original cell holds a fraction of its designed capacity, and this is overwhelmingly the most common reason these still arrive with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly.

If the phone is slow rather than short of charge, a battery will not help. That is age, software and full storage, and we would rather say so than take £49 for a repair that disappoints you.

Is a P9 Plus still worth repairing?

It depends what you ask of it, and we would rather be straight than take a booking you regret. The hardware still handles calls, messaging, browsing, photographs and video perfectly well. What it will not do is run the newest software, and some apps have stopped supporting devices this old.

As a second phone, a first phone for a child, or a handset for someone who wants something simple, £49 for a battery is fair money. Two faults at once takes you past the point where the sums work, and we will say so.

Charging faults on an older handset

Change the cable first – after this many years virtually every original cable has failed internally at the strain relief. Then change the mains plug. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which is close to universal on a phone this age and which we clear at no charge. Our £49 charging port repair comes last.

What we check before your P9 Plus goes back

A screen replacement is not finished when the display lights up. Before a P9 Plus leaves us we test touch response into all four corners, the fingerprint reader, the earpiece and loudspeaker, the front and rear cameras, the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

The proximity sensor is the one rushed repairs miss most often. Seated slightly out of position it fails to blank the display when you lift the phone to your ear, so your cheek presses buttons and mutes people mid-call. Owners reasonably assume that is a software bug – it is not, and catching it in the workshop takes minutes rather than costing you a second trip.

Is a Huawei P9 Plus worth repairing?

On a handset that otherwise works, a single repair is usually easy arithmetic – you keep the phone, the apps and the data exactly as they are, for well under replacement cost. Where it stops adding up is two or three faults at once, and we will tell you when you have reached that point rather than quoting for all of them. If the phone holds photographs or messages that were never backed up, ask about data recovery before writing it off.

Liquid damage: what to do straight away

Switch the phone off immediately and leave it off. Do not connect a charger and do not keep switching it on to check whether it survived – power running through a wet board is what turns a recoverable handset into a dead one, and it causes more write-offs than the liquid itself. Rice does nothing useful. Getting it to us quickly, so the board can be cleaned before corrosion establishes itself, is what improves the odds. Our water damage repair service covers this.

How long does a Huawei P9 Plus repair take?

Battery and charging work is usually completed the same day once the phone is with us. Screen replacement takes a little longer because the bonded assembly has to come out and go back cleanly, with the sensors tested afterwards. We confirm timing alongside the fixed quote and start only once you approve it.

Huawei P9 Plus Repairs: Honest Answers

Can I do the torch test on a P9 Plus?

No, and that is worth knowing. The torch test works on LCD phones because a failed backlight leaves the image faintly visible. The P9 Plus uses an AMOLED, which has no backlight, so a blank screen needs a proper diagnosis rather than that shortcut. The standard P9 does have an LCD.

What is the pressure-sensitive screen and can it be restored?

The P9 Plus could detect how firmly you pressed, which very few phones of its era offered. It relies on a sensing layer inside the display assembly, so a cheap generic screen may restore touch perfectly while quietly losing pressure sensitivity. Tell us if you use it and we will fit an assembly that supports it.

My screen is not cracked but the colours look wrong. Is that fixable?

Yes, and it is the panel rather than the glass. AMOLED displays can be damaged by a drop even when the outer glass survives intact. Shifted colours, a coloured line, or an area that has stopped responding to touch all mean the full assembly needs replacing.

Is a P9 Plus still worth repairing?

It depends what you ask of it. The hardware still handles calls, messaging, browsing and photographs well, and £49 for a battery is fair on a phone doing a settled job. What it will not do is run the newest software - some apps have stopped supporting devices this old.

Will a new battery make my P9 Plus faster?

No, and we will tell you that rather than taking the booking. Slowness on a device this age is software, app demands and full storage rather than the cell. A battery replacement helps when the phone will not hold charge.

My photos have gone hazy since I dropped it. Why?

Usually the rear camera glass. A crack across the housing lets dust reach the Leica lens assemblies and picture quality drops noticeably. On a phone bought for its camera that is worth raising rather than assuming it is simply age.
