The honest arithmetic on the cheapest phone we repair

A £49 battery on a Y6 that otherwise works is straightforwardly worth doing. It is the repair that makes the biggest practical difference and it costs well under what a replacement handset would.

A £69 screen is a genuine decision rather than an automatic yes, because it is close to what a used Y6 is worth. That does not make it wrong – if the phone holds photographs you have never backed up, or if it belongs to somebody who does not want to relearn a new device, it can be entirely the right call. But you deserve to know where you stand, and two repairs together does not add up on a handset at this price. We will say so rather than quoting for both.

The free check to run before anything else

The Y6 uses an LCD with a backlight behind it, which gives you a diagnostic that costs nothing. If the phone appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when connected to a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If you can faintly make out the home screen, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable. On the cheapest phone we handle, that single check is very often the difference between a working device and one that goes in a bin, and a great many perfectly repairable Y6s get written off because nobody thought to try it.

Why the Y6 ends up as a first phone

These are bought as children’s first handsets, as spare phones, and as devices for people who want calls, texts and a camera without paying for anything more. That shapes the faults we see: cracked screens well ahead of everything else, then charging sockets full of pocket lint, then batteries that have been cycled hard for years.

Charging faults are usually free to resolve

Clearing compacted lint from the socket is not a chargeable job here, and on a phone this age it is the most likely cause by a distance. After that, change the cable and then the mains plug, because worn cheap cables cause far more of these faults than broken ports do.

Only when all three come back clean is our £49 charging port repair the right answer. On the cheapest handset we repair, paying £49 for port work when a £6 cable was the whole problem is a genuinely bad outcome.

Is it slow, or is it simply full?

The Y6 shipped with very little storage, and once close to capacity it behaves exactly like a failing phone: apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots, everything drags, updates fail without explanation. None of that is a hardware fault.

Move photographs off, clear cached data and uninstall what you do not use. It costs nothing and on a phone this basic it makes more difference than any repair would.

Battery replacement at £49

After several years the original cell holds a fraction of its designed capacity, and this is a common reason these arrive with us. The cell is bonded in and has to be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled. If the handset is slow rather than short of charge, a battery will not help and we will tell you so.

What if it is not worth repairing?

Then we say so, and help you get the data off instead. Phones at this price are the ones most likely to be carrying photographs that exist nowhere else, because their owners are the least likely to be paying for cloud backup. Recovering those is often worth considerably more than the handset, and our data recovery service covers it. Ask before writing the phone off.
