Y7 Prime or Y7? Check before you get quoted

Huawei used the Y7 name across more than one handset and across more than one year, and mixing them up is the most common reason a repair on these gets delayed. Open Settings, then About phone, and read the model number.

It takes seconds and it is definitive. Quote it when you contact us and we can confirm the correct display assembly and the correct price on the first conversation rather than the second, because a panel ordered against the wrong variant simply will not fit.

The torch test worth running first

The Y7 Prime uses an LCD with a backlight behind it, so there is a free check worth doing before writing the phone off. If it appears dead – black screen, but it still rings, vibrates or shows up when plugged into a computer – take it into a dark room and shine a torch at the display at an angle.

If the home screen is faintly visible, the backlight has failed rather than the handset. Everything on it is intact and recoverable, and you are looking at an £89 screen replacement rather than a dead phone. On budget handsets this check decides an enormous number of cases and it costs nothing.

The fingerprint sensor is on the back

A conventional reader on the rear panel, entirely separate from the display. A screen replacement cannot break it and no re-enrolment is needed afterwards – unlike Huawei’s later flagships, where the sensor sits behind the screen and a rushed repair can leave a perfect display paired with a reader that recognises nothing.

Is it slow, or is it simply full?

Check before spending anything, because the answers are completely different. The Y7 Prime shipped with modest storage, and once close to capacity it behaves exactly like a failing phone: apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots, everything drags, updates fail silently.

Move photographs off, clear cached data and uninstall what you no longer use. It costs nothing and on handsets of this age it resolves the complaint more often than any repair would.

Charging faults: three free checks

Clearing compacted lint from the socket is not a chargeable job here, and on a phone this age it is the most likely cause of a cable that will not seat properly. Then change the cable, then the mains plug – worn cheap cables cause far more of these faults than broken ports do.

The cell in a Y7 Prime is bonded in with adhesive that has to be eased out slowly rather than levered, and on a chassis of this age patience matters more than speed – plastic that has spent years flexing in a pocket does not tolerate force well. After reassembly the phone is charge-tested rather than simply screwed back together and handed over.

Before booking, be sure the cell is genuinely the problem. A worn battery handles messaging and browsing perfectly well and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls. Sudden collapse under load is the signature, and it is quite different from a phone that is simply slow. If yours is sluggish but the charge still lasts, a new battery will change nothing and we would rather say so than take the booking.

Fitting a screen protector after a repair

Leave it a day or two before applying one. A replacement panel is bonded to the frame with fresh adhesive, and pressing a protector down firmly before that has cured can lift an edge or seat the display slightly out of plane.

Once it has settled, a plain tempered glass protector is well worth the few pounds. It sits flush on a flat screen like this one, absorbs the small knocks that would otherwise chip a corner of the glass, and replacing a cheap protector is a far better outcome than paying for another screen. On a large phone that gets used one-handed, pair it with a case that has genuinely raised corners.
