A pop-up camera in a budget phone

A small motor physically raises the front camera out of the top edge whenever you switch to selfie mode, then retracts it. It is the only moving part in the phone and, on a handset at this price, it is the component most likely to need attention as the years pass.

Failures are recognisable: the camera rises slowly or hesitantly, sticks part-way, grinds or buzzes, retracts on its own, or stops rising entirely with the camera app reporting an error. The Y9 Prime carried a large battery to drive its large screen, and endurance was a genuine part of the appeal. After several years of daily cycling that capacity drops noticeably, and this is among the most common reasons these arrive with us.

The cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be eased out slowly rather than levered, and the phone is charge-tested after reassembly. Confirm the battery is at fault first: a worn cell copes with messaging and browsing and then drops sharply during camera use, navigation or video calls.

Is it slow, or is it simply full?

Worth separating before spending anything. A handset close to storage capacity behaves exactly like a failing one – apps crash on opening, the camera refuses to save shots, everything drags. Move photographs off, clear cached data and uninstall what you no longer use. It costs nothing and on a budget phone it resolves the complaint more often than any repair.

Charging faults: three free checks

Change the cable, then the mains plug, then look into the socket with a torch for compacted pocket lint, which we clear at no charge.
