The 6th generation iPad mattered because it was the first non-Pro iPad Apple allowed to use the Apple Pencil. Overnight, a device schools could actually afford became a device children could draw and write on, and enormous numbers went into classrooms as a result. Many are still in service, and their repair needs are shaped by exactly that history.
How much does an iPad 6th generation (2018) repair cost?
Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:
- Touch screen (digitiser) replacement – £65
- Full screen replacement – £79
- Battery replacement – £65
- Charging port repair – £65
- Diagnostic service – £15
All prices include parts, labour and a 12 month guarantee, with nothing added at the end.
Apple Pencil support and what it means for a screen repair
This generation works with the first Apple Pencil, the one that charges by plugging into the Lightning port. If you use a Pencil, a screen replacement has to leave the digitiser tracking accurately across the whole panel, not just responding to fingers in the middle. Those are different standards, and a cheap repair can pass one while failing the other.
We test Pencil tracking to all four corners before returning any iPad that supports it. The failure people report weeks later is almost always edge behaviour: a line that breaks near a margin, or pressure that reads inconsistently at the top of the screen. Finding that in the workshop is straightforward. Finding it in a classroom halfway through term is not.
One thing worth knowing: the Apple Pencil 2, which charges magnetically on the side of newer iPads, does not work with this model and never did. If it will not attach magnetically, nothing is broken.
Two screen prices, and which one you need
The 6th generation uses a non-laminated display, so the outer glass with its touch layer is a separate part from the LCD behind it, separated by a small air gap. If the glass is cracked but the picture underneath is clean, only the digitiser needs replacing at £65. If the LCD is damaged too – dark patches, lines, wrong colours, no image at all – it becomes the £79 full screen repair.
Check it yourself before accepting any quote. Switch the iPad on in a dim room and look past the cracks at the image itself. Clean and evenly lit means the cheaper repair. It is a £14 difference and a lot of repairers quote the higher one by default.
Home button, Touch ID and the pairing limitation
Touch ID is inside the physical home button, and that button is paired to your logic board at the factory so a stolen iPad cannot be unlocked with a replacement part. In a normal repair we transfer your original button across and fingerprint unlock continues working as before.
Where the button assembly has been destroyed, typically by a hard impact to the bottom edge or liquid underneath it, a replacement works as a home button but Touch ID cannot come back. That is the pairing rather than any repairer’s limitation. We check and tell you before starting.
Battery replacement at £65
Classroom iPads have hard lives – charged in trolleys overnight, run flat daily, cycled far more than a family device would be. Batteries are the most common reason these arrive with us, and the cell is bonded in with adhesive that must be drawn out slowly rather than levered.
Before booking, confirm it is the battery. A tired cell manages reading or streaming and then collapses during video calls or drawing sessions. If the iPad is simply slow, check storage first: the 32GB version of this generation fills up fast, and a nearly full iPad crawls whatever its battery health. That costs nothing to fix.
Charging problems: cable before port
This model uses Lightning, and Lightning cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than the ports do. Change the cable first and use a decent one. Then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is close to universal on an iPad that has spent years in a school bag and which we clear at no charge. The £65 charging port repair is the last answer, not the first.
Do you handle school and college iPad fleets?
We do, and this is one of the models we see most of. Batches are quoted as batches rather than per device, we can work to a term or project deadline, and units come back individually labelled so they reach the right pupil. We will also tell you plainly which devices in a batch are past the point of economic repair, which matters far more when you are signing off twenty than one. contact us with rough numbers and we will come back with something workable.
How long does an iPad 6th generation repair take?
Battery and charging work is usually same-day once the device is with us. Screen work takes longer because the home button must be transferred carefully and the internal surfaces need to be genuinely clean before reassembly – dust in the air gap of a non-laminated display shows as specks under the glass afterwards.
Where can I get an iPad 6th generation repaired?
iExpert Repairs handles 6th generation iPad repairs from our Essex workshop and accepts devices from anywhere in the UK by tracked, insured post. contact us to arrange it.
We cover iPad screen repair, iPad battery replacement, iPad charging port repair and iPad water damage repair across every iPad generation, offer data recovery where a device cannot be saved, and handle other brands under tablet repair.
Is the 6th generation iPad water resistant?
No iPad Apple has built carries an IP rating, and this one is no exception – no seals, no gaskets, no official liquid protection at all. That matters more in a classroom or a kitchen than most people realise, because a flat device on a table is exactly where a knocked-over drink lands.
If it happens, switch it off immediately and do not plug in a charger. Running power through a wet board is the single most common way a recoverable iPad becomes a dead one. Leave it off and get it to us before corrosion establishes itself – our iPad water damage repair service covers exactly this, and where a board cannot be saved we can usually still attempt data recovery to retrieve the work stored on it.
iPad 6th Generation Repairs: Common Questions
Does the 6th generation iPad work with the Apple Pencil?
Yes, with the first generation Pencil that charges by plugging into the Lightning port. It was the first non-Pro iPad Apple allowed to use one, which is why so many went into schools. The Apple Pencil 2, which attaches magnetically to newer iPads, does not work with this model and never did.
How do I know a screen repair kept Pencil support working?
Draw slowly from corner to corner and watch for breaks near the margins. Edge tracking is what a cheap repair gets wrong - a digitiser can respond perfectly to fingers in the middle of the screen and still read a Pencil inconsistently at the top or sides. We test all four corners before any Pencil-capable iPad leaves us.
Which screen repair do I need, the £65 or the £79?
Switch the iPad on in a dim room and look past the cracks at the image itself. Clean and evenly lit means the LCD is fine and only the £65 digitiser needs replacing. Dark patches, lines, wrong colours or no picture means the £79 full screen. It is worth checking, because many repairers quote the higher price as standard.
Why do classroom iPads need batteries so often?
They are cycled far harder than family devices - charged in trolleys overnight and run flat daily, year after year. Lithium cells degrade by charge cycles rather than calendar age, so an iPad on that routine ages faster than its years suggest. At £65 it is usually well worth doing on a device that otherwise works.
Can Touch ID be restored if the home button is broken?
No. The button is paired to your logic board at the factory to stop stolen iPads being unlocked with replacement parts, so a new button works as a home button but cannot restore fingerprint unlock. In most repairs the original survives and we transfer it across intact. We tell you beforehand if yours looks at risk.
Do you repair iPads for schools in bulk?
Yes, and this is one of the models we see most of. Batches are quoted as batches, we work to term or project deadlines, and devices come back individually labelled. We will also tell you which units are past economic repair rather than quoting for everything, which matters more when you are approving twenty than one.
