The 2020 battery problem

Lithium cells degrade by charge cycles rather than by calendar age, and an iPad used daily for lessons and video calls throughout 2020 and 2021 racked up cycles fast. A device that spent that period plugged in for hours each day and then run flat every evening has had a harder life than its age suggests.

The symptom is usually not a device that dies instantly but one that behaves inconsistently. It holds up while reading or streaming and then drops twenty per cent the moment a video call starts. At £65 this is one of the cheapest battery replacements we offer on any iPad, and on a device that still does its job perfectly well it is straightforwardly worth doing.

Two screen prices, and why that saves you money

The 8th generation uses a non-laminated display, meaning the outer glass with its touch layer is a separate component from the LCD behind it, with a small air gap between. Premium iPads bond all of this into one assembly. This one does not, and that works in your favour.

Crack the glass while the picture underneath stays perfect and you need only the digitiser at £65. Damage the LCD as well – distorted colour, dark patches, lines across the image, no picture at all – and it becomes the £85 full screen repair. A lot of repairers quote the higher figure as standard. We look first, because a £20 saving is worth having on a device in this price range.

Home button and Touch ID

This generation has a physical home button with Touch ID inside it, and that button is paired to your logic board at the factory so a stolen iPad cannot be unlocked with a replacement. In a normal screen repair we transfer your original button across and fingerprint unlock continues to work exactly as before.

If the button itself has been destroyed, usually by a hard knock to the bottom edge or by liquid reaching underneath it, a new one will still function as a home button but Touch ID cannot be restored. That is a limitation of the pairing rather than of any repairer’s skill, and we will tell you if we think yours is at risk before starting work.

Lightning charging and the cable that is usually to blame

The 8th generation uses a Lightning connector. Lightning cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than Lightning ports fail, so a great many suspected port faults on this model turn out to be a cable that has quietly given up. Change it first, and use a decent one rather than the cheapest available.

Next, look into the socket with a torch. Compacted lint is extremely common on an iPad that has lived in a school bag for years, and clearing it is not a chargeable job here. Our £69 charging port repair is genuinely the last answer rather than the first.

Is an 8th generation iPad still worth keeping?

For reading, streaming, schoolwork, recipes and video calls, it remains entirely adequate, and the repair prices here are among the lowest of any iPad we handle. A £65 battery or a £65 digitiser on a working device is easy arithmetic against buying anything new.

Where it stops adding up is when several things have failed together. A full screen, a battery and a port all at once takes you past the point where repair makes sense, and we will say so rather than quoting for all three. How long does an iPad 8th generation repair take?

Battery and charging work is usually completed the same day once the device reaches us. Screen work takes a little longer because the home button has to be transferred carefully and a non-laminated display needs its internal surfaces properly clean before reassembly. Dust trapped in the air gap shows as visible specks under the glass afterwards, which is exactly the kind of detail a rushed repair leaves behind.

Is the iPad 8th generation water resistant?

No. No iPad Apple has ever made carries an IP rating of any kind, and this one is no exception. There are no seals and no official liquid protection whatsoever, which surprises people who have got used to modern iPhones surviving a spilled drink. A flat device on a kitchen table is also in exactly the wrong place when a glass goes over.

If liquid gets in, switch it off straight away and do not connect a charger. Pushing power through a wet board is the single most common way a recoverable iPad becomes a dead one, and it is the mistake we see more than any other.
