How we protect your data?
The original iPad mini from 2012 is the oldest device on our repair list, and we think you deserve a genuinely honest page about it rather than a sales one. At £75, a full screen replacement here is the cheapest we offer on any iPad – but whether it is money well spent depends entirely on what you intend to do with the device afterwards.
How much does an original iPad mini repair cost?
Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:
- Touch screen (digitiser) replacement – £65
- Full screen replacement – £75
- Battery replacement – £65
- Charging port repair – £65
- Diagnostic service – £15
Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee.
The honest position on a 2012 iPad
This device is well over a decade old. It has no fingerprint sensor, a non-Retina display that looked dated within a year of release, and it stopped receiving software updates a very long time ago. A large proportion of apps will not install on it at all, and many that do will not work properly.
So we will not pretend a repair turns it back into a useful modern tablet, because it does not. What a repair can do is keep a working object working for a defined purpose. If you have one running a specific old app, driving a display, serving as a child’s first device or acting as a simple photo frame, then £65 to fix it is entirely reasonable. If you are hoping to use it as a general tablet again, the money is better spent elsewhere and we would rather tell you that now.
The non-Retina screen, and what that means
The original mini used a low-resolution display – the Retina panel arrived with the mini 2 the following year. Text on this model looks visibly softer than on anything since, and that is how it left the factory rather than a sign of damage. If yours looks less sharp than you remember, that is the display it always had.
Because it is non-laminated, the glass and the panel are separate components with an air gap between them, which gives you two repair options rather than one.
Which screen repair do you need?
Switch the mini on in a dim room and deliberately ignore the cracks, looking only at the picture behind them. If the image is clean and evenly lit across the panel, the display survived and the £65 digitiser repair is likely all you need. Dark blotches, lines, wrong colours, dead touch patches or no picture at all mean the display is damaged too, and it becomes the £75 full screen.
It is only a £10 difference on this model, but the check takes ten seconds and it is worth knowing what you are paying for.
No Touch ID and no Apple Pencil
The original mini has neither. Touch ID reached the mini line with the mini 3, and Apple Pencil support with the mini 5. If you have bought accessories expecting either to work, nothing is broken on your device – the hardware never had the capability and no repair can add it.
Battery replacement at £65
After more than a decade, the original cell holds very little of its designed capacity, and a mini that will not last an hour away from a charger is behaving exactly as a battery of that age does. The cell is bonded in and has to be eased out slowly rather than levered, since a chassis this small and this old is easy to damage in the process.
If the mini is slow rather than short on charge, a battery will not help. That is age and software, and we would rather say so than take £65 for a repair that disappoints you.
Charging faults on a very old socket
Change the Lightning cable first – after this long, virtually every original cable has failed internally at the strain relief. Then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is close to guaranteed on a device that has spent a decade in pockets and bags, and which we clear at no charge. Only then is our £65 charging port repair the right answer.
What if the repair does not make sense?
We will say so, and on a device this old that is a real possibility. Two faults together takes you past the point where the sums work. What is stored on it usually matters far more than the hardware – old photographs and notes that exist nowhere else can frequently be recovered even from a mini that will never work properly again, and our data recovery service is often the more sensible thing to spend money on. Ask us before writing it off.
Where can I get an original iPad mini repaired?
iExpert Repairs handles original iPad mini repairs from our Essex workshop and accepts devices from anywhere in the UK by tracked, insured post. contact us to arrange it, or simply to ask whether it is worth doing at all – we will give you a straight answer either way.
We cover iPad screen repair, iPad battery replacement, iPad charging port repair and iPad water damage repair on every iPad generation, and handle other brands under tablet repair. Our iPad repair page lists every model we support.
What can an original iPad mini still be used for?
More than you might think, provided the job is a fixed one. We see these still earning their keep as digital photo frames, as always-on displays for home automation dashboards, as dedicated music players wired into a stereo, as a controller for older hardware that needs an app no longer sold, and as a first device for a small child where breaking it would not be a disaster. In each case the iPad is doing one thing it was always capable of, rather than being asked to keep up with modern software.
That is the frame we would encourage you to apply to the repair decision. Not “is this iPad still good”, because by current standards it is not, but “is there a specific job this will do reliably for another few years”. If the answer is yes, £65 is a perfectly sensible amount to spend. If the answer is no, we will say so.
What our 12 month guarantee covers
Every repair is guaranteed for 12 months on the part and the workmanship, and a device being old does not change that. If a replacement digitiser develops dead touch areas or a new battery will not hold charge in normal use, it comes back to us and we put it right at no cost to you. A fresh drop is a new accident rather than a failed repair, and we say so plainly rather than hiding it in small print. The parts on an original mini cost less because the components cost less, not because the work or the cover is any different.
Original iPad mini Repairs: An Honest Assessment
Is a 2012 iPad mini worth repairing?
It depends entirely on what you will do with it afterwards, and we will not pretend otherwise. If it runs a specific old app, drives a display, serves as a child's first device or acts as a photo frame, £65 is reasonable. If you want a general tablet again, the money is better spent elsewhere and we would rather tell you now.
Why does my iPad mini screen look soft compared to newer ones?
Because the original mini used a low-resolution, non-Retina display - the Retina panel arrived with the mini 2 the following year. Text has always looked visibly softer on this model. That is how it left the factory rather than a sign of damage or a failing screen.
Which screen repair do I need on this model?
Switch it on in a dim room and ignore the cracks, looking only at the picture. Clean and evenly lit means the display survived and the £65 digitiser repair is likely enough. Dark blotches, lines, wrong colours or no picture means the £75 full screen. It is only £10 between them, but worth knowing what you are paying for.
Why does Touch ID not work on my original mini?
It never had it. Touch ID reached the mini line with the mini 3, and Apple Pencil support with the mini 5. If you have bought accessories expecting either to work, nothing is broken on your device - the hardware never had the capability and no repair can add it.
My mini is slow. Would a new battery help?
No. That is age and software rather than the cell, and we would rather say so than take £65 for a repair that disappoints you. A battery replacement helps if the device will not hold charge - after more than a decade the original cell holds very little of its designed capacity.
What if my old mini is beyond repair?
We tell you, and on a device this age it is a real possibility - two faults together takes you past the point where the sums work. What is stored on it usually matters far more than the hardware, and old photographs that exist nowhere else can often still be recovered. Ask us before writing it off.
