If you have a 9th generation iPad with a cracked screen, there is a question worth asking before you accept anybody’s quote: is the display underneath still working properly? On this model that answer can halve your repair bill, and it is the single most useful thing on this page.
How much does an iPad 9th generation (2021) repair cost?
Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:
- Touch screen (digitiser) replacement — £65
- Full screen replacement — £85
- Battery replacement — £69
- Charging port repair — £69
- Diagnostic service — £15
Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee. The £15 diagnostic applies only to faults outside this list.
Why there are two different screen prices
The 9th generation iPad uses a non-laminated display. That means the outer glass with the touch layer bonded to it — the digitiser — is a separate physical component from the LCD panel behind it, with a small air gap between the two. Premium iPads fuse all of this into one unit. This one does not, and for once that is good news for you.
If you crack the glass but the picture underneath is still perfect, only the digitiser needs replacing, and that is the £65 repair. If the LCD itself is damaged — distorted colour, black patches, lines across the image, or nothing displaying at all — then the panel needs replacing too, and that is the £85 job. Plenty of repairers quote the higher figure by default. We check first, because on a device at this price a £20 difference genuinely matters.
A useful test at home: with the iPad on, look at the screen in a dim room and ignore the cracks entirely. Is the image itself clean, evenly lit and the right colour? If yes, you probably need the cheaper repair.
The home button, Touch ID and what cannot be fixed
This was one of the last iPads with a physical home button, and Touch ID lives inside it. That button is paired to your specific logic board at the factory, which prevents somebody unlocking a stolen iPad by fitting a new one. During a screen repair we transfer your original home button across intact and Touch ID carries on working exactly as before.
Where the button itself has been destroyed — usually by a hard impact to the bottom edge or by liquid getting underneath it — a replacement will still work as a home button but Touch ID cannot be restored. No repairer can get around this, and anyone who tells you otherwise is either mistaken or planning something that will not survive a software update. We tell you if we think yours is at risk before we start.
The last Lightning iPad, and what that means
The 9th generation uses a Lightning connector rather than USB-C. Lightning ports wear differently: the connector is smaller, the pins are exposed on the plug rather than protected inside it, and cables fail internally at the strain relief more often than the port itself fails. That last point matters, because it means a great many suspected port faults on this model are actually cable faults.
Change the cable before anything else, and use a decent one. Then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is extremely common on an iPad that lives in a school bag and which we clear at no charge. Our £69 charging port repair is genuinely the last answer rather than the first.
Battery replacement at £69
These iPads are now several years old and worked hard, so batteries are one of the most common reasons a 9th generation arrives with us. The cell is bonded in with adhesive strips that have to be drawn out slowly, and the device is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.
Before booking, be sure the battery is the problem. A tired cell copes fine with light reading and then collapses during a video call or a game. If instead the iPad is just slow, check the storage — the base model of this generation shipped with very little, and a nearly full iPad crawls no matter how healthy the battery is. Clearing space costs nothing and fixes that complaint surprisingly often.
Is a 9th generation iPad still worth repairing?
For most owners, yes. It remains perfectly capable for reading, streaming, schoolwork and video calls, and the repair prices are among the lowest of any iPad we handle. A £65 digitiser or a £69 battery on a working device is easy arithmetic. Where it gets marginal is when several things have failed at once, and in that case we will tell you rather than quoting for all of them.
How long does an iPad 9th generation repair take?
Battery and charging work is normally same-day once the device is with us. Screen work takes a little longer because the home button has to be transferred carefully, and a non-laminated display needs the internal surfaces properly clean before reassembly — dust trapped in the air gap shows up as visible specks under the glass. We confirm timing with the fixed quote.
Where can I get an iPad 9th generation repaired?
iExpert Repairs repairs 9th generation iPads from our Essex workshop and accepts devices from anywhere in the UK by tracked, insured post. contact us to arrange it or to ask which of the two screen repairs you are likely to need.
We cover iPad screen repair, iPad battery replacement, iPad charging port repair and iPad water damage repair on every iPad generation, offer data recovery where a device cannot be economically saved, and handle other brands under tablet repair. Our iPad repair page lists every model we support.
What if my 9th generation iPad is not worth repairing?
It usually is, but when it is not we say so. A device that needs a full screen, a battery and a port all at once has passed the point where the arithmetic works, and there is no version of that conversation where we quote for all three and hope you do not notice. At that stage a good refurbished replacement is the better use of your money and we would rather tell you than take it.
What often matters more than the iPad is what is on it. School work, photographs and notes that were never backed up are the reason people care about these devices, and those can frequently be recovered even from a machine that will never be used again. Our data recovery service covers that, and on a device at this price it is regularly the more sensible thing to spend money on. Ask us about it before writing the iPad off entirely.
iPad 9th Generation Repairs: Your Questions Answered
Why are there two different screen prices for the 9th generation iPad?
Because this model uses a non-laminated display, so the outer glass with the touch layer is a separate component from the LCD behind it. If you crack the glass but the picture is still perfect, only the digitiser needs replacing at £65. If the LCD is damaged too, the full screen repair is £85. Many repairers quote the higher price by default — we check first.
How do I know which screen repair I need?
With the iPad switched on, look at it in a dim room and ignore the cracks entirely. Ask whether the image itself is clean, evenly lit and the right colour. If yes, you probably need the cheaper £65 digitiser repair. Distorted colour, black patches, lines across the image or no picture at all point to the £85 job.
Will Touch ID still work after the screen is replaced?
Yes, provided the original home button survives, and it usually does. That button is paired to your logic board at the factory, so we transfer your original across during the repair. If the button itself was destroyed by impact or liquid, a replacement works as a home button but Touch ID cannot be restored — by us or anybody else.
My 9th generation iPad will not charge. Is the port broken?
Often not. This model uses Lightning, and Lightning cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than the ports themselves fail. Change the cable first, then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is very common in school bags and which we clear free. A £69 port repair should be the last answer.
Is a 9th generation iPad still worth fixing?
For most people, yes. It is still perfectly capable for reading, streaming, schoolwork and video calls, and its repair prices are among the lowest of any iPad we handle. A £65 digitiser or a £69 battery on an otherwise sound device is easy arithmetic. Several faults at once is where it stops adding up, and we will say so.
My iPad is slow. Will a new battery help?
Check the storage before spending anything. The base model of this generation shipped with very little space, and a nearly full iPad crawls regardless of battery health. A genuine battery fault behaves differently — fine while reading, then collapsing during video calls or games. Clearing space costs nothing and resolves the complaint more often than people expect.
