The cheapest modern iPad to keep running

The gap between this and the premium end of the range is worth spelling out. A screen on a 13-inch iPad Pro runs into the hundreds. A screen here is £169. Across five or six years of ownership, with the odd accident along the way, that difference adds up to considerably more than the price gap between the two devices at purchase.

This is the practical case for the standard iPad that specification comparisons never capture. If the device is going to live in a school bag, on a kitchen counter or in the hands of somebody who is not especially careful with it, buying the model that is cheap to repair is a better decision than buying the one with the faster chip.

Why this iPad ends up in schools and family homes

The A16 iPad is the workhorse of the range, and we see more of them from schools, colleges and households with children than any other current model. That shapes the faults we deal with. Cracked screens outnumber everything else by a wide margin, followed by charging sockets full of pocket lint and batteries that have been cycled hard for years.

Touch ID sits in the top button

Like the iPad Air, this generation puts the fingerprint sensor inside the power button rather than on the display, and that button is paired to your logic board at the factory to prevent a stolen iPad being unlocked with a replacement part. During a screen replacement we transfer the original button across intact, and Touch ID carries on working exactly as before.

The exception is where the button assembly itself has been destroyed by the impact or by liquid. In that case a new button will still switch the iPad on and off, but fingerprint unlock cannot be restored at all. It is not a limitation any repairer can work around, and we tell you before starting if we think yours is at risk.

Cracked glass on a laminated display

The A16 iPad uses a laminated display, so the glass, digitiser and LCD are bonded into a single assembly and replaced together. There is no cheaper glass-only option on this model. That is worth knowing because some older iPads do have a separate digitiser and a much cheaper glass repair, and people reasonably assume the same applies here.

If the image beneath the cracks is clean and touch works everywhere, the damage is structural and you can take a little time deciding. Keep an eye out for glass lifting or shedding though – open cracks let dust and moisture reach the panel, and a device used daily with an open crack usually arrives with a worse problem than it started with.

Battery replacement at £75

This is one of the better value iPad battery repairs we offer, and on a device this affordable it is an easy decision. The cell is bonded in with adhesive that has to be drawn out slowly rather than levered, and the iPad is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply screwed back together.

Before booking, check behaviour under load rather than at rest. A cell near the end of its life will read or stream perfectly happily and then collapse during a video call or a game. That pattern points at the battery. If the iPad is instead just slow, look at how full the storage is first, because a nearly full iPad behaves sluggishly regardless of battery health.

Charging faults: free checks before you pay anything

Change the USB-C cable, change the mains adapter, then check the socket with a torch. Compacted pocket lint stopping the cable seating fully is the single most common cause on iPads that live in bags, and clearing it is not a chargeable job here. Only once those three are genuinely ruled out does our £75 charging port repair become the right answer.
