The iPad mini 2 was the model that gave the small iPad a Retina display, and it is the one people most often confuse with the mini 3. There is one difference that matters and it is easy to check: the mini 2 has no fingerprint sensor at all.

How much does an iPad mini 2 (2013) repair cost?

Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:

  • Touch screen (digitiser) replacement — £65
  • Full screen replacement — £79
  • Battery replacement — £65
  • Charging port repair — £65
  • Diagnostic service — £15

Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee. The £15 diagnostic applies only to faults outside this list.

The mini 2 has no Touch ID, and that is not a fault

Look at the home button. If it is plain, with no metal ring around it, you have a mini 2 and there is no fingerprint sensor in it. If there is a thin metal ring, you have a mini 3. That single detail is essentially the whole difference between the two models.

We mention it because people buying one second-hand sometimes conclude the fingerprint reader has failed, or that a previous repair disabled it. Nothing is broken. The hardware never had one, and no repair can add it. It also matters for quotes, since the two models take different home button assemblies.

The first Retina mini

The original mini had a low-resolution display that looked dated almost immediately. The mini 2 fixed that with a Retina panel at the same resolution as the full-size iPad of the time, packed into a much smaller screen. It is the reason these still look perfectly readable today, and the reason so many are still in use as e-readers.

Two screen prices, and how to tell which you need

The mini 2 uses a non-laminated display, meaning the outer glass with its touch layer is a separate component from the LCD behind it, with a small air gap between the two. That works in your favour after a drop.

Crack the glass while the picture underneath stays perfect and only the digitiser needs replacing, at £65. Damage the LCD as well — dark blotches, lines, wrong colours, no image — and it becomes the £79 full screen. Switch the mini on in a dim room, ignore the cracks and judge the image alone. Ten seconds, and a £14 difference worth having.

Is a mini 2 still worth repairing?

Only for settled, specific uses, and we would rather say that plainly than take a booking you regret. These are now well over a decade old. The hardware still copes with reading, video and light browsing, but a great deal of current software will not install on them at all, and that is not something any repair addresses.

As a dedicated e-reader, a kitchen screen, a video player for a child or a controller for something around the house, one of these can genuinely still earn its keep, and £65 for a battery to keep it in that role is fair money. If several faults have stacked up, the sums stop working and we will tell you.

Battery replacement at £65

After more than a decade the original cell holds a small fraction of its designed capacity, and this is by far the most common reason these still arrive with us. A mini is a tight package, so the bonded cell has to be eased out slowly rather than levered — force on a chassis this compact creates damage that was not there before. The device is charge-tested after reassembly.

Confirm the battery is the issue first. A worn cell manages light reading and then collapses under any real load. If the mini is simply slow, that is age and software rather than the cell, and a new battery changes nothing.

Charging faults after a decade in pockets

Change the Lightning cable before anything else. Cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than the ports themselves do, and after this many years virtually every original cable has given up. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is close to universal on a mini that has lived in bags and pockets for a decade, and which we clear at no charge. Our £65 charging port repair is the last answer rather than the first.

Is it water resistant?

No. No iPad carries an IP rating and there are no seals inside this one. If liquid gets in, switch it off and do not connect a charger — power through a wet board is the most common way a recoverable device becomes a dead one. Our iPad water damage repair service covers this.

What if it is beyond economic repair?

We tell you rather than quoting for everything. On hardware this old, what is stored on it usually matters far more than the device — photographs and notes that were never backed up can frequently be recovered even from a mini that will never switch on properly again. Ask us about data recovery before writing it off entirely.

Where can I get an iPad mini 2 repaired?

iExpert Repairs handles iPad mini 2 repairs from our Essex workshop and accepts devices from anywhere in the UK by tracked, insured post. contact us to arrange it or to get a straight answer on whether it is worth doing.

We cover iPad screen repair, iPad battery replacement, iPad charging port repair and iPad water damage repair on every iPad generation, and handle other brands under tablet repair. Our iPad repair page lists every model we support.

Buying a used iPad mini 2? What to look for

These sell for very little now and get bought on impulse, so a minute of checking is worth doing. Confirm it is actually a mini 2 rather than a mini 3 by looking for the metal ring around the home button — plenty are listed wrongly, in both directions. Switch it on in a dim room and look for uneven backlight patches or specks visible under the glass, which point to a previous screen repair carried out without properly cleaning the air gap. And check the storage size, because the 16GB version is effectively unusable today once the operating system has taken its share.

None of that necessarily rules a device out and all of it is repairable, but it is far better established before money changes hands. We are happy to look one over as part of a general iPad repair assessment, and to tell you honestly whether it is worth what is being asked.

What our 12 month guarantee covers

Every repair we carry out is guaranteed for 12 months on the part and the workmanship, and that applies just as much to a decade-old mini as to a current iPad Pro. If a replacement digitiser develops dead touch areas or a new battery fails to hold charge in normal use, it comes back to us and we put it right at no cost. A fresh drop is a new accident rather than a failed repair, and we would rather state that plainly than bury it in small print.

iPad mini 2 Repairs: Straight Answers

Why does my iPad mini 2 have no fingerprint sensor?

Because it never had one. Look at the home button — plain with no metal ring means a mini 2, while a thin metal ring means a mini 3 with Touch ID. That is essentially the whole difference between the models. Nothing is broken and no repair can add it.

How do I tell a mini 2 from a mini 3 before getting a quote?

The metal ring around the home button. It matters because the two models take different home button assemblies, so a quote given against the wrong one just delays the work while the right part is sourced. Settings, General, About confirms it outright if you want certainty.

Which screen repair do I need, the £65 or the £79?

Switch the mini on in a dim room, ignore the cracks and judge the image alone. Clean and evenly lit means the LCD survived and only the £65 digitiser is needed. Dark blotches, lines, wrong colours or no picture means the £79 full screen. Ten seconds, and a £14 difference worth having.

Is a mini 2 worth repairing now?

Only for settled, specific uses, and we would rather say so than take a booking you regret. As a dedicated e-reader, kitchen screen or video player for a child it can genuinely still earn its keep, and £65 for a battery is fair. A great deal of current software will not install on it at all.

Will a new battery make my old mini faster?

No, and we will tell you that rather than taking the booking. Slowness on a device this age is software and app demands rather than the cell. A genuine battery fault behaves differently: fine during light reading, then collapsing under any real load.

My mini will not charge. Is the port broken?

Change the Lightning cable first — after this many years virtually every original cable has given up, and cables fail far more often than ports do. Then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is nearly universal on a mini that has lived in bags and pockets for a decade. We clear that free.
