How we protect your data?

The iPad mini 3 is the most easily confused iPad Apple ever made. Externally it is all but identical to the mini 2 that preceded it, and the only meaningful difference is the fingerprint sensor in the home button. If you are getting a repair quote, establishing which of the two you own is the first thing to do.

How much does an iPad mini 3 (2014) repair cost?

Our fixed prices at iExpert Repairs are:

  • Touch screen (digitiser) replacement – £65
  • Full screen replacement – £79
  • Battery replacement – £65
  • Charging port repair – £65
  • Diagnostic service – £15

Each includes the part, the labour and a 12 month guarantee. The £15 diagnostic applies only to faults outside this list.

mini 2 or mini 3? Here is the test

Look at the home button. If there is a thin metal ring around it, you have a mini 3 and it has Touch ID. If the button is plain with no ring, you have a mini 2 and it has no fingerprint sensor at all. That is the whole difference, along with a gold colour option Apple added.

Settings, then General, then About confirms it outright if you want certainty. It is worth checking before you ring anywhere, because the two models take different home button assemblies, and a quote given against the wrong one simply delays the work while the right part is sourced.

Touch ID and the limitation nobody can work around

The fingerprint sensor sits inside the home button, and that button is paired to your specific logic board at the factory to prevent a stolen iPad being unlocked with a replacement. In an ordinary screen repair we transfer your original button across and Touch ID keeps working exactly as before.

Where the button itself has been destroyed – usually a hard impact to the bottom edge, or liquid reaching underneath – a new one will still function as a home button but Touch ID cannot be restored by anybody. If a repairer tells you otherwise, they are either mistaken or planning something that will not survive a software update.

Two screen prices, and how to tell which you need

The mini 3 uses a non-laminated display, so the outer glass with its touch layer is a separate physical component from the LCD behind it, with a small air gap between. That works in your favour after a drop.

Crack the glass while the picture underneath stays perfect and only the digitiser needs replacing at £65. Damage the LCD too – dark blotches, lines, wrong colours, no image – and it becomes the £79 full screen. Switch it on in a dim room and look past the cracks at the image quality alone. Ten seconds, and it is a £14 difference worth having on a device at this price.

Is a mini 3 still worth repairing?

Only for particular uses, and we would rather be straight about that than take a booking. These are now well over a decade old, and while the hardware still handles reading, video and browsing, a great deal of current software will not install on them at all.

As a dedicated reader, a kitchen screen, a video player for a child or a controller for something in the house, one of these can still earn its keep, and £65 for a battery to achieve that is fair. If several things have failed, or if you need current apps, the money is better spent elsewhere and we will say so.

Battery replacement at £65

After this long the original cell holds a fraction of what it once did. A mini is a tight package, so the bonded cell must be eased out slowly rather than levered – force on a chassis this compact creates damage that was not there before. The device is charge-tested after reassembly rather than simply reassembled.

Confirm the battery is the issue first. A worn cell manages light reading and then collapses under any real load. If the mini is simply slow, that is age and software, and a new battery will not change it.

Charging faults on a decade-old socket

Change the Lightning cable first – cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than the ports do, and after this many years most originals are long gone. Then look into the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is close to universal on a mini that has spent a decade in pockets and bags, and which we clear at no charge. Our £65 charging port repair comes last.

What if it is not worth fixing?

We will tell you. Several faults at once on hardware this old takes you well past the point where the sums work. What is stored on the iPad usually matters more than the iPad – photographs and notes never backed up can often be recovered even from a device that will never switch on properly again. Ask us about data recovery first.

Buying a used iPad mini 3? Three things to check

These are cheap enough second-hand that people buy them on impulse, and three checks take a minute. First, confirm it actually is a mini 3 by looking for the metal ring around the home button – plenty are advertised as mini 3s and turn out to be mini 2s. Second, switch it on in a dim room and look for uneven backlight patches or specks under the glass, both of which point to a previous screen repair done without properly cleaning the air gap. Third, check the storage capacity, because the 16GB version is effectively unusable today once the operating system has taken its share.

None of those necessarily rules a device out, and all are repairable, but knowing before money changes hands beats finding out afterwards. We are happy to look one over as part of a general iPad repair assessment.

iPad mini 3 Repairs: Questions Answered

How do I tell a mini 3 from a mini 2?

Look at the home button. A thin metal ring around it means a mini 3 with Touch ID. A plain button with no ring means a mini 2, which has no fingerprint sensor at all. That is essentially the whole difference between them, along with the gold colour Apple added. Settings, General, About confirms it outright.

Does it matter which one I have for a repair quote?

Yes. The two models take different home button assemblies, so a quote given against the wrong one simply delays the work while the correct part is sourced. It takes seconds to check and saves a wasted conversation.

Can Touch ID be restored if the home button is destroyed?

No. The button is paired to your specific logic board at the factory, so a replacement works as a home button but cannot restore fingerprint unlock. If a repairer tells you otherwise, they are either mistaken or planning something that will not survive a software update. In most repairs the original survives and we transfer it across.

Which screen repair do I need, the £65 or the £79?

Switch the mini on in a dim room and look past the cracks at the image quality alone. Clean and evenly lit means the LCD survived and only the £65 digitiser is needed. Dark blotches, lines, wrong colours or no picture at all means the £79 full screen. It takes about ten seconds to check.

Is a mini 3 worth repairing in 2026?

Only for particular uses, and we would rather be straight about that. As a dedicated reader, kitchen screen or video player for a child it can still earn its keep, and £65 for a battery is fair. A great deal of current software will not install on a device this age, and no repair changes that.

My old mini will not charge. Is the port dead?

Change the cable first. Lightning cables fail internally at the strain relief far more often than ports do, and after this many years most originals are long gone. Then check the socket with a torch for compacted lint, which is nearly universal on a mini that has spent a decade in pockets, and which we clear free.
