iPhone 11 Pro Max Repairs: The Last of the Curved Edges

The 11 Pro Max was the final large iPhone before Apple returned to flat sides, and plenty of owners still prefer it for exactly that reason. Rounded edges are kinder to the hand and, in our experience, kinder to screens too, because an impact spreads across a wider contact area instead of concentrating on one sharp corner.

It also carried an enormous battery and a genuinely good OLED display, both of which are why these are still in daily use six years on. At £65 for a screen, keeping one running costs very little.

Screen Replacement (£65)

A bonded OLED panel, replaced as a complete assembly. Worth being clear on this, because it causes confusion: the 11 Pro and Pro Max use OLED displays, while the standard iPhone 11 of the same year uses an LCD. They are different parts at different prices, and a quote for one does not apply to the other.

• Cracks spreading from the point of impact
• Dead zones where touch no longer registers
• Green or pink vertical lines after a drop
• Black patches bleeding outwards over several days
• Ghost touches occurring with nobody holding the phone

Battery Replacement (£59)

The 11 Pro Max shipped with one of the largest batteries Apple had ever fitted, and it was rightly praised for endurance. Six years later that same cell has been through a great many charge cycles, and the drop from exceptional to poor feels severe.

• Maximum capacity below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
• Endurance a fraction of what it was when new
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, worse in cold weather
• Charge dropping in steps rather than smoothly
• The phone feeling slow as well as short on charge

That last point explains a lot of what people interpret as an old phone getting tired. iOS reduces peak processor performance when battery health is poor, specifically to prevent unexpected shutdowns. Back Glass Replacement (£59)

Bonded rear glass, removed with a laser separator. This generation predates MagSafe, so there is no magnet array underneath, but the wireless charging coil still sits directly behind the panel and is easily damaged by anyone attempting the job with heat and prying tools.

• Loose fragments scratch the camera lenses from behind
• The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
• Wireless charging becomes intermittent or stops
• The large camera square makes rear damage very visible

Charging Repair

Lightning port, six years of daily insertions. The internal contacts wear down, so the cable still clicks in and holds securely while the electrical connection has quietly become unreliable. Charging that works when you press or angle the cable and stops when you release it is the classic symptom.

Before any of that, expect six years of compacted lint packed into a narrow socket. On phones this age it is very often the entire problem, and cleaning it is not a chargeable repair. Camera Repair (£55)

The 11 Pro Max introduced the large square camera housing with three lenses, and that housing stands well proud of the body. It is the first thing to make contact when the phone lands face up, which is why cracked lens covers are so common on this model.

• Cracked lens cover glass with the modules beneath undamaged
• Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
• Rattling or grinding as optical stabilisation fails
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Telephoto or ultra-wide dead while the main lens works

Because there are three lenses sharing one cover, a single crack can affect all of them while every module underneath remains perfectly fine. Face ID and Front Sensor Faults

The TrueDepth array behind the notch drives Face ID, and on six year old handsets failures come from wear and from liquid ingress owners have long forgotten. Refusing to enrol a new face, failing repeatedly in dim light, or reporting itself unavailable all point there.

Face ID is paired to the logic board at manufacture, so a damaged TrueDepth module cannot be swapped in from another handset and made to work. A torn or disconnected flex cable is repairable. We diagnose which you have before quoting rather than charging you to find out.

Water Damage and Unexplained Faults

Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful starting points.

In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned by tracked delivery, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days. All eligible repairs carry a 12 month warranty on parts and labour whatever the age of the handset. Faults relating to our work are put right at no cost. New accidental damage, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.
