iPhone X Repairs: The Phone That Changed Everything
The iPhone X was the first Apple handset with Face ID, the first with a notch, and the first to drop the home button entirely. Every iPhone since has followed the template it set. It is now eight years old, and while it no longer receives the newest major iOS releases, a great many are still in service as second phones, spares and handsets passed down through families.
We will be straight with you about repairing one. At £55 for a screen and £49 for most other jobs, a single repair is easily worth doing on a phone you want to keep using. A phone needing three separate repairs at once is a different conversation, and we will have that conversation honestly rather than quoting you for all three.
All work is carried out at our Essex repair centre with a twelve month warranty.
Screen Replacement (£55)
A bonded OLED panel replaced as a complete assembly. The X used one of Apple’s earliest OLED displays, and that matters because early OLED is more susceptible to burn-in than later generations.
- Cracks spreading from the impact point
- Dead areas where touch no longer registers
- Green or pink vertical lines after a drop
- Black patches bleeding outwards over days
- Faint permanent ghosting of the keyboard, status bar or app icons
That last symptom is specific to this generation and worth explaining. If you can see a faint permanent outline of your keyboard or the status bar even on a plain background, that is burn-in from eight years of the same pixels being lit. It is not damage, it cannot be repaired, and the only fix is a new panel. Plenty of X owners live with it quite happily. If your screen is misbehaving without any drop, read phone screen flickering. Our iPhone screen repair page covers the process.
Battery Replacement (£49)
After eight years, every original iPhone X battery is long past its service life. If yours has never been replaced, this is almost certainly why the phone feels the way it does.
- Maximum capacity well below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
- Lasting only a few hours on light use
- Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, particularly in cold weather
- Charge dropping in very large steps
- The phone feeling slow as well as short on charge
This is the repair that decides whether an X is worth keeping. iOS throttles peak performance heavily when battery health is poor, so on a phone this age the difference a £49 cell makes to responsiveness is often more noticeable than the improvement in endurance. Rule out software first with our guide on why a phone battery drains so fast, and see iPhone battery replacement for pricing.
Back Glass Replacement (£49)
Bonded rear glass removed with a laser separator. After eight years the adhesive has cured completely, and the wireless charging coil directly behind the panel will not survive an attempt with heat and prying tools.
- Loose fragments scratch the camera lenses from behind
- The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
- Wireless charging becomes unreliable or stops entirely
- Sharp edges are a genuine nuisance in daily use
See iPhone back glass repair for the method, and the cracked back glass guide for why home kits go wrong.
Charging Repair (£49)
Lightning port with eight years of insertions behind it. The internal contacts wear, so the cable still clicks in and feels secure while the connection has quietly become unreliable. Charging that works when you press or angle the cable and stops when you release it is the classic sign.
On a phone this old, though, expect a socket genuinely packed with compacted lint. It is very often the entire problem and costs nothing like £49 to resolve. We clean and test first, every time. Try a different cable and mains plug, then read why a phone will not charge. Our iPhone charging port repair page explains replacement.
Camera Repair (£49)
A vertical dual lens arrangement with both lenses under shared cover glass. A single crack can look catastrophic while both modules underneath remain perfectly serviceable.
- Cracked lens cover with the modules beneath undamaged
- Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
- Rattling or grinding as optical stabilisation fails
- Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
- Telephoto dead while the main lens works normally
We check which you need rather than quoting for a module. Where nothing was dropped, phone camera not working covers the software checks.
Face ID on the First Face ID Phone
The X was the first handset with Face ID and, being the oldest, it is the one where we see failures most often. Refusing to enrol a new face, failing repeatedly in dim light, or reporting itself unavailable all point at the TrueDepth array behind the notch.
Here is the part that matters, and it matters more on an X than on any newer model: Face ID is paired to the logic board at manufacture. A damaged TrueDepth module cannot be replaced with one from another handset and made to work. There is no workaround. A torn or disconnected flex cable is repairable, and that is worth checking for. But if the module itself has failed on an eight year old phone, the honest answer is that you will be using a passcode from now on, and we would rather tell you that than charge you to find out.
Water Damage and Unexplained Faults
Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted blind, and after eight years historic corrosion is the norm rather than the exception. On a handset of this value we will tell you frankly if the repair is uneconomic. Our iPhone water damage repair page explains the approach, and phone data recovery is available when what you actually need is the photographs off it.
Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful first reads.
Turnaround, Warranty and Booking
In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days. Send-back postage is free and Klarna is available at checkout.
All eligible repairs carry a 12 month warranty on parts and labour, and that applies to an eight year old iPhone X exactly as it does to a current model. New accidental damage, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.
Book online through our Essex repair centre page, call 07939 990557, or contact us.
We also repair the iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 8 and iPhone XS Max, with the full range on our iPhone repairs page.
