iPhone XS Repairs: Cheap to Fix, Still Perfectly Usable

The XS was the refined version of the phone that introduced Face ID, and it aged better than most. Stainless steel frame, a good OLED display, and a size that suits people who never wanted a large handset. Seven years on we still repair these regularly.

Pricing reflects the age. A screen is £55, and a battery, back glass, camera or charging repair is £45 each. That puts a comprehensive refresh of a tired XS well within reach, which is why so many end up as second phones, spares or handsets passed down to family.

All work is carried out at our Essex repair centre with a twelve month warranty.

Screen Replacement (£55)

A bonded OLED panel replaced as a complete assembly. The XS uses OLED rather than the LCD fitted to the XR of the same year, which is worth stating clearly because the two are frequently confused and they are different parts at different prices.

• Cracks spreading from the impact point
• Dead areas where touch no longer registers
• Green or pink vertical lines after a drop
• Black patches bleeding outwards over several days
• Ghost touches occurring without any input

Battery Replacement (£45)

On a seven year old phone this is not optional, it is the repair that decides whether the handset is usable at all. Original XS batteries are long past their service life and most we test come in well below 70 percent capacity.

• Maximum capacity below 80 percent in Settings, Battery, Battery Health
• Lasting only a few hours on ordinary use
• Sudden shutdowns with charge still displayed, especially in cold weather
• Charge dropping in large steps rather than smoothly
• The phone feeling slow as well as short on charge

At £45 this is the best money you can spend on an XS by a wide margin. iOS reduces peak performance when battery health is poor, so replacing the cell usually restores responsiveness alongside endurance, and a phone people had written off as too old to bother with becomes genuinely serviceable again. Back Glass Replacement (£45)

Bonded rear glass, removed with a laser separator. The wireless charging coil sits directly behind the panel and does not survive an attempt with heat and prying tools, which is why this job has a fixed price here and a vague one elsewhere.

• Loose fragments scratch the camera lenses from behind
• The moisture seal fails as soon as the glass cracks
• Wireless charging becomes unreliable or stops entirely
• Sharp edges are a nuisance on a phone in daily use

Charging Repair (£45)

Lightning port with seven years of insertions behind it. The internal contacts wear, so the cable clicks in and feels secure while the connection has become unreliable. Charging that works when you press or angle the cable and stops when you release it is the classic sign.

On phones this age, though, expect a socket genuinely packed with compacted lint. It is very often the whole problem and it is not a £45 repair. We clean and test first, every time. Camera Repair (£45)

The XS uses a vertical dual lens arrangement with both lenses under shared cover glass. A single crack across it can look far worse than it is, because the modules underneath are frequently untouched.

• Cracked lens cover with the modules beneath undamaged
• Blurry images across every shooting mode after a drop
• Rattling or grinding as stabilisation fails
• Camera app opening black or crashing on launch
• Telephoto dead while the main lens works normally

Face ID Faults on Older Handsets

Face ID failures become more common with age, and the XS is now old enough that we see them regularly. Refusing to enrol a new face, failing repeatedly in dim light, or reporting itself unavailable all point at the TrueDepth array behind the notch.

The honest position: Face ID is paired to the logic board at manufacture, so a damaged TrueDepth module cannot be replaced with one from another handset and made to work. A torn or disconnected flex cable is repairable. On a phone of this value that distinction matters, because one is a sensible repair and the other means living without Face ID. Water Damage and Unexplained Faults

Liquid damage is assessed rather than quoted blind, and after seven years historic corrosion is extremely common. We will give you a straight view on whether the repair is economic on a handset of this age rather than taking your money to find out it is not. Anything else unclear carries a £15 diagnostic, deducted from the repair if you proceed. Phone keeps restarting and phone overheating are useful first reads.

Turnaround, Warranty and Booking

In-store repairs are usually completed within one to three hours on the same day and you are welcome to wait. Mail-in repairs are typically finished within eight to twelve hours of arriving and returned tracked, most customers seeing their phone in two to three working days. All eligible repairs carry a 12 month warranty on parts and labour whatever the age of the phone, and we mean that on a seven year old handset just as much as a new one. New accidental damage, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.
